Finally feel like I'm winning!

I've had type 2 diabetes for what feels like forever. I could never seem to get my blood sugar under control, and my doctors always seemed frustrated with me. I hated the lows and then overcorrecting with too much sugar. After too many lectures, I basically gave up trying for a couple of years. My A1c was something like 13.5 a couple years ago and still around 10.8 last year. I finally decided to give it one more shot and found a fantastic doctor who actually listens and includes me in the treatment plan. She started me on a GLP-1 med last summer. Went for a checkup today... my A1c is 5.7 now! Everything's in the green on my chart!

I was also diagnosed young and felt horrible on metformin and another GLP-1. It took me over 2 years of focusing on diet and lifestyle because the meds made me feel worse! My doctor put me on a different GLP-1 medication along with another diabetic med, and I haven't had any side effects. My first blood test a few months later got me to 7.2. I expect to be in the low 5s soon. I still get morning spikes, but I hear that gets better as you slim down. My cholesterol's also normal now, so no more meds for that either.

It's such a relief when medication can help fix problems in the body, and you realize that it wasn't just your fault all along.

First, congrats. Period.

You did it.

Think about that.

The meds can do a lot, but lots of folks don't get their A1c that low or manage to lose the weight and keep it off. Healthy habits bring healthy results.

When you say the doctors were disappointed - did they say that, or did you just feel that way?

If they said that, that is not okay from a healthcare provider. It should be a respectful conversation.

If you interpreted it that way, you should talk to your provider or another caregiver like a nurse, social worker, or counselor.

Again: You did this.

Your past inability to control it is about the meds, treatment, instructions, and practice. While you had a role, you can't beat Type 2 when it leads to cravings and thirst and hunger, especially for carbs. Without medical help, it's hard to break the cycle.

Congrats and keep having good days!!!

@Pure-Quest, thanks for the thoughtful reply! To clarify, it was a mix of their words and my own feelings, I think. They would say things like, "We really need to see better control," and I'd feel like I was failing. It's a relief to have a doctor who's more encouraging now.

It's amazing how much your health can improve! A year ago, I was pre-diabetic with high cholesterol and a fatty liver. I also had back and knee pain. Now? All gone! I've lost about 60 pounds, and I feel fantastic. Huge thanks to this medication!

I'm at my goal weight! Lost about 150 pounds since last year. I had T2D, now it's reversed. I used to wear 4XL shirts. Now I wear medium. It can be done. This med opened the door, but YOU have to walk through it. Protein is key!

staying at 2mg for maintenance and eating at maintenance calories now. A1c's normal, kidneys improving, cardiovascular wins just keep coming. not dropping dose because i'm getting too many benefits to stop. diabetic, kidney, heart, and anti-inflammatory stuff all disappears if i quit.

On Melanotan 1 for about a month now. Did the loading phase—face was super flushed the first week but that settled. No side effects now. 1 mg twice a week and I try to catch some sun on pin days. Progress is slow but steady on the color front.

hitting 7.5mg gave me rough non-gastric side effects. takes 4 weekly shots to feel the full effect of any dose because it builds up. probiotics killed my digestive issues from week 3 onward — over a year in with zero GI problems even when upping doses.

low ferritin isn't a diagnosis by itself, needs explaining. pre-menopausal women usually not a big deal but 60 year old or male? absolutely needs looking into. often requires checking for gut blood loss w/ scoping unless it's diet.

restarted 4 months ago, did everything right, and just upped to 2mg since I stopped losing weight. omg I've been violently vomiting—nothing left in my stomach, got a nosebleed from it. only in the last hour could I hold water down. got a prescription for the nausea. will never take 2mg again. be careful and stick lower if you can.

This makes me so happy for you. Lost 40 pounds on semaglutide myself and feel incredible. Gained 50 in my twenties mostly from stress eating and drinking too much. Finally feeling like myself again thanks to this medicine.
