GLP-1s and bone health?

I've been on tirzepatide and upped my calcium intake, and my recent DEXA scan showed a 15% improvement in my osteopenia. Can't say for sure which one's responsible, but I'm sticking with both!

Wow, that's great news! Thanks for sharing your experience. My insurance only covers a DEXA scan every 5 years, and this year's showed mild osteopenia. Besides tirzepatide, I also inject BPC-157, hoping it'll help my bones. Did you pay for extra scans yourself?

You might wanna look into oxandrolone (anavar). It's an oral anabolic steroid, but don't freak out. It's got lots of studies behind it, and low doses like 5-10mg a day have been used to treat muscle wasting, burns, and even help heal ligaments and tendons. Plus, it can strengthen bones. They've even used it on kids and women.

Nope, got them through insurance. Looks like I'm getting them every 3 years now. Maybe with your osteopenia diagnosis, they'll increase how often you get them, but improvement takes time. I found out about my osteopenia after a fall... ended up with a messed-up fracture that needed a huge plate.

A 12" plate meant for a tibia was used on your humerus fracture? I hope it's titanium! Your humerus must be huge! My doc offered meds, but I'm not taking any prescriptions for my mild osteopenia. I bike almost daily and have taken a few spills, fracturing my radial head and collarbone twice each. Got a plate on my left clavicle from one of those. Maybe the vibrations from my bike stimulate bone growth?

There are places that do DEXA scans without a doctor's order. It's about $200 in my area. I just booked one for next week!

Has anyone else found that their appetite is just...gone on GLP-1s? I've lost about 18 lbs in a month without even trying. I keep reading that it still takes work, but I haven't changed anything besides taking the shot.

I'm down almost 90 pounds. I also haven't changed my habits, other than eating way less. I eat the same stuff as before, just smaller portions. The meds definitely seem to be doing the work for me. I used to crave junk all the time, now it's background noise.

It's important to remember that these medications highlight underlying hormonal imbalances. For some, constant hunger isn't about willpower; it's a physiological response. These medications correct that, allowing the body to regulate hunger properly. It's not a magic bullet, but a tool for a healthier lifestyle.

This might be a dumb question, but where do you guys go to learn more about all this stuff? I feel like I'm just winging it. I saw something about Duolingo-style GLP-1 education...anyone know anything about that?

That sounds interesting! I'd definitely be up for trying something like that. Learning about this stuff can be overwhelming.

The GLP-2 pathway in bone is the mechanism - early osteoblast data is promising but clinical significance at typical doses is still unclear.
