Something nobody says out loud. This compound did not get shelved because it did not work. It worked well enough that one of its own metabolites was isolated and turned into a prescription drug for a completely different purpose. That is the uncomfortable part.
The issue is receptor selectivity. Alpha MSH analogs do not politely knock on one door. They hit the melanocortin family broadly, which is why people report appetite suppression, flushing, nausea and spontaneous erections sitting right next to the tan they wanted. Those are not side effects bolted on afterwards. They are the same mechanism expressing itself in different tissue.
The tanning crowd treats it as a cosmetic tool. The pharmacology disagrees. And it still moves through the gray market because demand never cared about the mechanism, only the mirror.
So here is what I keep circling. If a compound's own breakdown product was clean enough to become a controlled prescription for a specific indication, what does that say about using the parent compound casually for appearance.
