10 Months In: My GLP-1 Story

Hey everyone, wanted to share my progress as I approach my first year! Some background: I've struggled with obesity for what feels like forever. I'm also dealing with type 2 diabetes (currently on 1000mg of metformin and about 150 units of insulin daily), cholesterol issues (medicated), and hypertension (managed with three different meds). Back in August of '22, I had a couple of mastectomies due to breast cancer, but thankfully didn't need chemo or hormone therapy. Last summer was rough. My amazing mom passed away at 93, and grief hit me hard. I packed on nearly 15 pounds in a matter of weeks. I knew I needed to take action!

I started a GLP-1 medication on Oct 7, 2024, weighing in at 293lbs. I randomly set a goal weight of 199lbs, never really believing I could get there. I followed the dosage increase schedule, and things moved along pretty well. My main side effect has been some constipation (linzess helps), and a few plateaus. Fast forward almost 51 weeks, and I actually beat that initial goal! I've shed about 96 pounds. I'm now down to just one blood pressure med and using only around 45-50 units of insulin per day. PLUS, I recently joined a local YMCA cancer survivor exercise program. It's a 3-month program, twice a week, focused on strength training and improving balance. I've never been a gym person, but I'm loving it and already feel stronger. I've been able to participate in almost everything, only needing a few adjustments due to some shoulder issues from a past fracture.

I think I remember reading that weight loss can slow down when you start strength training. I've been hovering around 199-200lbs, but I'm hoping to reach my new goal of 175-180lbs. Fingers crossed.

Keep pushing forward in your journeys and remember to be kind to yourselves!

My deepest condolences for your mom's passing, Melt_Update179. Your progress with your health is incredible! I'm so happy for all your health improvements. Keep up the great work and continue to prioritize your well-being.

That's fantastic progress Melt_Update179, especially given the tough circumstances. I'm really sorry about your mom. I lost mine not long ago, and it's devastating. You're doing amazing! Keep it up and all the best for the future.

I'm so sorry about your mother as well, Eddie1987. I also have a very close relationship with my mom and I can only imagine your pain. I'm glad you both were so lucky that she lived to 93!

Melt_Update179, thank you for sharing your story, too. The more people who have access to these medications, the healthier our communities will be in the long run. I've been fortunate that my insurance covers it, but some of my older relatives don't have coverage or are wary of trying them.

It's truly difficult losing a loved one, and then to face cancer treatment on top of that is a nightmare no one wants to go through! Well done for not giving up, Melt_Update179! You look fantastic. Keep up the awesome work 👏🏼

Fantastic, very well done, congratulations. I think your mother would be very proud of you. All the very best for the future.

I saw a woman talking about her diabetes checkup successes. She said her A1c was 5.0, and they've taken her off metformin and reduced her blood pressure meds! Labs all normal. She just needs more cardio and strength training now.

That's amazing! Those are the kinds of results we all dream about. Good for her!

That's incredible news! I'm hoping to get to that point with my diabetes meds soon. It's so encouraging to hear these stories. It makes all the hard work feel worthwhile.
