Battling the Nausea Rollercoaster

Okay, I'm almost through my first week, taking 0.25mg. This nausea is intense! It hits me when I wake up and again like, half an hour after I eat anything. Ginger tea is helping a little bit.

What's everyone doing to keep the nausea at bay? Does it ever disappear? I know I should probably stick to really plain foods and divide things into smaller portions. I have been eating smaller meals, but I didn't know my food choices would be so limited.

The early-week nausea is brutal but usually eases — a community write-up on managing GLP-1 GI symptoms has a week-by-week of what to expect and how people coped.

If I have a light meal the day of and after my shot, that helps. I also avoid alcohol at all costs on those days.

I drink a ton of sugar free ginger ale.

I found mints helped me more then anything. I also tried an anti-nausea med with no luck. Luckily, my nausea isn't as bad anymore, but it was horrible for a bit, I feel your pain.

Honestly, sometimes throwing up made me feel so much better. That initial month is brutal. The nausea came back when the dose was increased, but it wasn't nearly as intense.

Drinking lots of water was my savior. I had intermittent nausea for maybe 2-3 weeks, then it just popped up occasionally. That's what made me feel human again.

I'm all about those stomach soothing lozenges you can get online, they usually come in an orange package. With lemon, ginger, and honey, they really work. Some ginger candies or chews can be overpowering, I've noticed.

Also, ask your doctor about a slower increase to higher doses, and maybe prescription nausea medicine. An anti-nausea med was a lifesaver for me.

I use ginger scented candles, and those seem to do the trick most of the time. When I mentioned how bad it was to my doctor, she prescribed an antiemetic just in case. I only experience the nausea a couple days after my dose, and not every week, thankfully.

Smile! Seriously!

When you feel like you're going to be sick, smile as big as you can. A nurse taught me that when I had my baby. Worth a try!

To add to my experience, I really struggled with electrolyte imbalances alongside the nausea. I found that supplementing with electrolytes really helped! I was using a sugar free hydration product, but I got tired of it.

That is a great point, getting enough electrolytes can make a big difference. I take a magnesium supplement, and I think that has helped my nausea level. There are also hydration products that contain different electrolytes, but I just use the supplement.

Thanks, @Doc_Tale! I'll bring that up at my next appointment. I'm already dreading the dose increase if this is how I feel on the starting dose!

Electrolyte drinks are essential! I've found it makes a huge difference with the dehydration and nausea. I like the ones with extra nutrients and electrolytes in there.

Everyone reacts different. My advice: if you think it'll help, take the chance. I had a rough go after the first dose bump and stayed home a couple days. Now I throw up when I hit certain foods—high salt, spicy, some dairy—or if I eat too much at once. Go slow and track what happens. It works if you're careful about it.

It was horrible for me. Ended up on nausea meds just to tolerate it. A friend ended up in the ER from how sick she felt. Ginger ale and ginger root tea helped a little. Took about six months to adjust, then I switched jobs and lost insurance coverage.

Two months in on sema and haven't had any nausea or vomiting yet. Upped my dose and still nothing. Might be eating cleaner now and I take it at night before bed, which I read helps avoid nausea. Feeling lucky it's smooth so far and hoping it stays this way.

Pepcid really helped with the sulfur burps for me. If you have zofran, those two together are a combo. Hard candy or peppermint helps too, or sniffing an alcohol pad. I had to switch off the other med early because my side effects were way worse.
