Creatine While on GLP-1?

Has anyone started creatine supplements to help with gym workouts while taking semaglutide? What has your experience been? I just started about a month ago, and I feel better during my workouts. Curious if anyone else has tried this combo!

Members note creatine is widely seen as safe alongside GLP-1s; some flag staying hydrated and telling your doctor it can raise lab creatinine. Member experiences, not medical advice.

I believe creatine is beneficial for everyone. It’s one of the most scientifically validated supplements. It’s safe and effective. In addition to its fitness advantages, it has been demonstrated to promote cognitive function, cardiovascular health, and potentially aid in recovery from traumatic brain injury.

A consideration is that starting creatine while already losing weight can lead to some weight gain. This is because it causes water retention throughout your body, particularly in your muscle cells.

Although the weight gain won't be substantial, some increase is expected as you initially load it and reach effective levels.

Also, some individuals may experience stomach discomfort when using creatine. I didn't used to, but I do now that I'm taking GLP-1 medications.

I should clarify that I dose my creatine at 20mg daily, which is beyond what's needed for muscle and fitness, aiming for cognitive benefits. Standard dosing is 5-10mg per day for fitness purposes.

Totally! Not just for muscles but also for stamina, brain function (may help prevent dementia), hormone regulation, and potentially alleviating low mood. And some women find it helps with their periods, apparently. I can't speak to that personally lol. But yeah, creatine for all!

I did use it before starting sema, but I stopped a couple of months ago. I started sema in January '26 and have just started taking 2.5 mg of creatine each day. So far, so good. Note that many people retain water when taking creatine, but most find the benefits outweigh this effect. The water weight sometimes subsides after a while. It's generally a safe and effective supplement from what I understand!

I've used it on and off for many years. Might it cause some slight water retention? Possibly. However, I definitely observe a benefit in my workouts. It also helps prevent cramps and improves my endurance. Perhaps a 10-15% increase in performance. Best to try it and see for yourself. Buy a good, unflavored brand and mix it into a sports drink or protein shake.

I've been on creatine for months. I used to be around 195, now I'm 205 just from taking it. Which is why I'm on my 2nd week of sema. I haven't been under 200 since taking it. I take 5g in the morning.

Yep. Been on semaglutide since last summer and started creatine at the same time. My weight loss isn’t super quick, but my body fat % is dropping faster, and I’m lifting more than ever. It’s been a great addition to semaglutide for me!

I've tested several different brands, both powders and capsules, and all of them left a metallic taste in my mouth.

What effect do creatine supplements have on kidney function? I've been told to monitor my levels to avoid harming my kidneys-- is creatine still a viable option?

I do. I didn't for a long time because it's costly, but it lasts forever, and I get a better lift and a more visible pump. First week I could increase my weight at even more reps.

This is interesting. I'm freshly prescribed tirzepatide. I don't formally work out, but I am extremely active around my house and land. Shoveling gravel, digging holes, working with tools etc. Is creatine something that might benefit me? I often have shoulder and back soreness after overdoing it...

Yeah, it's great! Between that and making sure I get enough protein, I feel the best I have in a lot of years.

I tried it for a while, but I stopped when I experienced bloating and weight gain (I couldn't get through the first few weeks). Didn't help that I was taking some cheap costco gummies which tasted awful and felt like eating old gumdrops.

I definitely felt the energy benefits while working out, though. I've felt fatigued from time to time on a glp-1, but I think the creatine helped with that. I'll probably try it again when I'm closer to my goal.

I agree with Taylor_09 re: those gummies. I tried some once and they were like stale candy. I definitely prefer the powder mixed in with my protein shake. Tastes fine and no weird texture.

Following up on my earlier question, anyone else find that creatine helps with general muscle soreness from physical labor? I'm not trying to be a bodybuilder, just trying to feel less beat up after a day of yard work.

I take it, too… 1000mg gummy… not the best taste but it works.
Maybe I'll try gummies like Brook_2003 does.

Speaking of muscle growth, I've been reading about how maximizing protein intake is key, especially if you're trying to build muscle while losing weight on a GLP-1. It's a balancing act!
