GLP-1 costs are bumming me out

Feeling kinda let down, tbh.

I talked to my doctor about using meds to help manage my weight.

I mentioned that the price seemed too high, and he understood. So, we moved on to other topics.

Then I decided to check my insurance:

Mounjaro and Ozempic: $35 for a month's supply.
Wegovy: $800.
Zepbound: Not covered at all.

I asked if I could get Mounjaro or Ozempic, but he said I'd need to use Wegovy or Zepbound since the others are for diabetics, which I'm not.

I get it, but still, it sucks.

That's why a lot of people explore other avenues. If you decide to go that route, do your research. There are online forums dedicated to GLP-1 medications where users share their experiences and findings. Some even do independent lab tests to verify quality. Just be careful.

I see a weight management specialist who's covered under my insurance. He gets compounded sema from a local pharmacy for me. Cost is around $70 a month with delivery, which is a much better deal. I used to pay over $300 through an online service. Maybe your doctor can refer you to someone similar? Feels way more legit, too.

If you want to stick with approved sources, check out the manufacturer's direct program for Zepbound. The prices are listed on their website, and your doctor can send the prescription to them directly.

Even with their savings card, it's still around $450 monthly for the maintenance doses. Maybe it would be less with your insurance.

The issue might be that your insurance only covers Mounjaro or Ozempic for diabetes, not for weight loss. That's how my insurance works. The only weight loss med they cover is Wegovy, but the copay is so high it's cheaper to pay out-of-pocket with a savings card.

Still, $800 for Wegovy? That seems excessively high. Where are you located?

I'm in New Zealand, and everything is more expensive here because of our remote location and small population. Wegovy's about $450 NZD a month, which is ~$270 USD.

I'm saving a lot on food and drinks, so it evens out.

Thanks, everyone. I appreciate the replies.

I worry about some of the sources I see online. Some of them seem shady.. like the ones for $100 a month. I get nervous about what I'm really getting.

It's great to see your posts, you're all doing so well!

I get it. Check out some dedicated online forums. Some folks share independent testing to prove the quality from various sources. There are many workarounds to get GLP-1s.

For those of you on government insurance like Medicaid, it might be worth asking your doctor to submit the prescription anyway.

They can always say no. Some states do require Wegovy first.
