GLP-1 Noob - Stalling?

Okay, first off, a massive apology to everyone using Mounjaro! For months I've been lurking, seeing your amazing progress (you all look fantastic!), secretly a bit jealous and maybe complaining because I wasn't seeing ANY weight loss. Like, zero pounds gone! And not even a hint of a side effect, nothing. Well, things have changed, lol.

But the past several months have been incredible for my overall health. I've had diabetes for 35 years, 2 decades on insulin, plus other health issues. After a month on this, my A1C started plummeting (was 9.9 in Sept, down to 5.1 in Jan). Blood sugar, kidney function, and heart-related labs are stabilizing and improving. Doc said my body was prioritizing internal repair first. And each month my dose increased. I kind of accepted the health benefits -- even if it meant dealing with an extra 35-40lbs of weight.

I hadn't tweaked my diet at all--I already ate fairly well due to my other health concerns (kidney stuff, high triglycerides, ostomy). No changes to activity either.

Until now...Oh boy. I started on 12.5mg around 3 weeks back and it's really kicked me. I'm wiped out, headaches, nausea, even threw up a couple of times. Muscle fatigue, zero appetite, and almost 13 lbs gone.

Now my loose arm skin and stomach are a bit more noticeable, LOL. But hey, I can see my collarbones! Who knew?

I was supposed to take my fourth shot yesterday, but I am unsure. Should I dial it back to 10mg now that the 12.5mg seems to have jumpstarted my body? Or maybe space out the shots?

Has anyone ever tried stretching out their weekly shot from 7 days to maybe 10?

Since you're using it for diabetes, I would really suggest talking with your doctor before stretching out the shots, just to make sure they agree with that plan.

The side effects tend to get easier over time. I'd suggest sticking with this dose since it's clearly working for you. Plus, as another diabetic, this medication isn't really meant to be spaced out like that on a regular basis. Forgetting a dose once in a while is one thing, but I'd be worried about your A1C if you don't clear this with your doctor.

GLP-1 meds seem to affect diabetics differently. They address internal system imbalances first, which it sounds like you've seen with your A1C and blood labs. (Big congrats on those improvements!) Mine are still a work in progress, lol.

Once your body is more balanced, and your insulin resistance and inflammation decrease, it becomes easier for your body to release the extra weight. Pretty awesome, right?

Make sure you are getting plenty of protein and fluids. If you cannot eat much, try protein shakes like Fairlife – lactose-free with 30g protein and only 150 calories. I mix it with some cold brew coffee from Costco and ice. I add fiber or a stool softener depending on how I feel, lol.

I'm so jealous reading this. I've been taking this for over a year, now on the 15mg dose. I dropped around 20 pounds in the first couple of months, but nothing since then.

It feels like I'm the only person on the planet this isn't working for.

I still have a good appetite. I can't eat as much as I used to, which is good, but I'm just not losing any weight.

It's generally more effective to take a smaller dose more frequently than a larger dose less often. 7.5mg every 6 days, for example, could be better than 12.5mg every 10 days. But as others have said, talk to your doctor before changing things up too much!

I'm only on day 6, and the food noise has gone silent. I keep wondering if this is what it's like for thin people? Not always thinking about what they're going to eat next? It's pretty wild!

Don't get discouraged! I've been on 15mg since June and I've lost about 90lbs total, but the last few months the weight has come off super slow. Like, maybe 2-3 pounds a month. But I am losing inches! I also stall every 10 pounds or so, sometimes for weeks at a time. I swim 5 days a week, and while I don't diet, I do control my portions. I still eat pizza, but only one slice instead of half the pie, LOL. I also try to cut out sugar and limit carbs.

I understand your frustration. Have you spoken to your doctor about it? It might be worthwhile to rule out any underlying medical issues that could be hindering your progress, even with the GLP-1 medication.
