GLP-1 & Travel Woes!

The medical travel bag in the carryon is the right call - insulin pens and GLP-1 pens have the same cold chain requirement. A small cooler sleeve with a single ice pack handles most domestic legs; international adds customs documentation for controlled items.

ten months in, down 100 lbs. didn't expect the loose skin and wrinkles showing up more. I'm 68 and not doing surgery for it. not terrible but got 30 more to go so it gets worse. watch for plateau weeks - I ate heavy last holiday season and didn't move. waited to see if it was the season or stuck, then got my dose bumped and started dropping again.

Just gotta vent here... maybe help someone else. I'm a 60yo woman, been on weight-loss shots since last spring. I've dropped around 55 pounds, hoping to lose 55 more. Lucky me, no bad side effects whatsoever, it's been great. I did my homework, so food issues were nary a problem.

Recently, my husband and I had to rush off to a kinda remote spot a few states over. Dogs and camper in tow! Driving there and back wasn't too bad. But a couple days into the stay... yikes. I'm not pushing my diet on my hubs; we both try to eat decently. The trip was about function, not leisure, so food wasn't a big deal. *Until* the family wanted to do a celebratory meal afterward. Grandkids wanted fun, so we hit up this local buffet-arcade-game place. Big mistake. The food was awful! Barely anything I could eat. I hadn't eaten all day, felt shaky and headache-y, so I *had* to eat *something*. I went for the 'least bad' options. I piled up on canned green beans, which barely count as a side, never mind a meal! Had a tiny bit of other stuff and didn't even finish. I was shocked there wasn't any fresh salad stuff. Only premade salads, ew!

That night? Ugh, felt like I'd swallowed a brick. Next day? Sulfur burps from hell. Belch, belch, belch, non-stop. Vile taste!

Night two: gas, painful gas bubbles working their way through my gut. Side cramps, then RIP noxious farts that could clear a room. That lasted a full day. Burps calmed down a little but the gas was unreal!

Day 3 now, burps mostly gone, but the lower gas... what is that even? Feels like an alien invasion in my intestines. I'm trying easy-to-digest whole foods to flush this junk out, hope it works.

Why is it legal to sell this garbage? It's basically poison, IMO. No wonder so many people have health problems! And this wasn't some cheap kid's place, but it was still awful.

Warning: watch what you eat! 'Appetizing' doesn't mean 'good for you' on these meds.

Day 5, traveling again, which is better than being stuck there. That town was so small, just gas stations with sad 'market' sections of canned goods. I get what food deserts are now, having lived in one.

For me, travel itself, not just the cuisine, can mess with your digestion while on GLP-1s. All the routine changes throw off your hydration, and there are environmental signals we don't even consciously notice that keep things regular. And the different meal times.... all of that can cause major gut issues, just like what you described. To try to keep things 'normal' for my gut during travel chaos, I use a gentle laxative. I take smaller doses a few times daily. Mixed in water, so it helps with hydration too. I find keeping things moving prevents those multi-day GI disasters from environmental changes. During those rough patches, take the max dose of anti-gas meds to deal with the gas.

I travel often and usually have no problems, because I can stick to my rather bland diet. But when taking long train trips, especially on the Deutsche Bahn (living in Europe), I always grab some plain bread as an emergency food before the journey.

A buffet with zero healthy options? A dieter's worst nightmare!

I went to an underdeveloped country for three weeks. I stopped taking my weight loss shots a week before the trip.

Can you share what you normally eat compared to that buffet, WolfHealed? I'm curious. I struggle with cruciferous veggies. When I travel, I now use stool softeners, since sitting makes constipation worse. Hope this helps! I also agree with Blair75 about hydration.

I've heard Dr. Nadolsky speak about this forumject, and he emphasizes that GLP-1s are just one tool. Lifestyle changes, including diet and exercise, are key for long-term success. It's not just about the medication.

I hear you on the food quality. It's frustrating. But try to be kind to yourself. One bad meal doesn't undo everything. Just get back on track.

Thanks everyone for the advice! I will definitely be packing more of my own food from now on, and I'll look into those anti-gas pills. Sub_Path, usually I try to eat a lot of protein and veggies, but I'm not perfect!

The insulin travel case approach is practical - pre-frozen gel packs with TSA clearance handle the temperature requirement. Hard shell protects the vial. The whole kit usually runs under $30 on Amazon.

The CPAP trade-off on long trips is real - the sleep quality difference is obvious but hauling the machine and dealing with hotel power adapters gets old. A travel-sized unit helps but it's still another bag.
