Turning 55 this year. I was super active when I was younger, maybe TOO active. Lots of injuries – broken bones, back issues, the works. As I got older, healing took longer, and I started packing on the pounds. I'd use recovery as an excuse to eat whatever I wanted. Used to be able to bounce back, but around 54, I just gave up. Figured I'd just be overweight and unhappy. Then my doctor told me I was prediabetic and suggested semaglutide meds. I didn't care, honestly, I had a pizza waiting. Started on 0.25mg around June '24. Almost immediately, I noticed a shift in my head. Cravings started to quiet down. Booze, cigarettes, junk food – all less appealing as I upped the dose. I did have some serious constipation at first and considered quitting, but then I started reading up on dietary changes and gave them a try. Lots of salads, lean protein like fish, and cutting way back on the carbs. Aimed for under 50g of carbs and 1200 calories a day, eating small meals all the time. Still wasn't working out. The weight came off fast at first, then slowed down, so I made some adjustments. After a month on 2mg weekly, I switched to a high-protein, less-than-25g carb diet and started exercising... really slowly at first, so I wouldn't re-injure myself.
And then it hit me. I remembered how good it felt to exercise! Started working out and stretching every day. I could see progress, little by little. It reminded me how much I loved snowboarding when I was young, and how I pushed myself to get back to it after injuries. It's like my brain was rewired, and my body followed.
6'6", used to be pretty muscular.
Disclaimer: I gain muscle and fat easily. My goal is to get back to my weight from the 90's - around 225 lbs.
June 2024 - 338 lbs, almost no muscle, couldn't walk up the stairs without being winded.
January 2025 - 248 lbs and getting stronger every day.
Five more months to go, 20 more lbs to lose, and those stubborn love handles have GOT to go!
