GLP-1s: A word of caution?

It's with a heavy heart that I share this. My husband passed away Tuesday due to complications from severe malnutrition. He had a vertical sleeve gastrectomy in early '21 and dropped almost 90 pounds. He still felt overweight, so he started Mounjaro. It worked TOO well. He lost all interest in food and wasn't eating enough protein which I think caused the malnutrition. It might not be a problem for most people, but I felt I needed to say something. I don't want anyone else to experience this type of loss.

It's definitely worth talking about, Eddie1987, and I'm very sorry for what happened. A lot of people aren't prioritizing their health when taking these medications. It's important to understand how these drugs work. While side effects are always possible, these drugs were initially intended and studied for overweight individuals with type 2 diabetes. They can cause significant changes in the body, so it's a serious matter. Some people are taking them without proper medical supervision. Or they don't make any changes to their diet and then regain the weight when they discontinue. They have been a game changer for many, including myself, in managing my diabetes. But people have to be aware of possible harm. Even if you are careful, there are no guarantees.

I’m so sorry for your loss, Eddie1987. Undereating is a real risk on these meds, particularly for those who are highly responsive or have a history of disordered eating. Stories like this highlight the importance of being super careful about your diet. It's not just about eating enough but also ensuring you're getting enough fluids and essential nutrients like protein. We know that these drugs can sometimes improve liver issues, but everyone is different, and close medical supervision is crucial, especially if you have underlying health conditions.

So sorry you had to experience that. ❤️❤️

Bariatric patients can run into absorption problems that need to be addressed while taking any of the glp-1 drugs. We end up eating less and absorbing fewer nutrients from that smaller amount compared to someone who hasn’t had bariatric surgery eating the same quantity.

Was she under medical supervision the whole time, Eddie1987? I see my doctor regularly and get blood work done several times a year to check for deficiencies, and I take high-potency liposomal vitamins too.

I’m sorry for your loss, it sounds like her doctors didn't monitor her closely enough.

I worry about people here who get upset that they still feel hunger. We are supposed to eat! A friend of mine dropped a lot of weight really fast and would literally not eat anything all day until 7 or 8 pm. That’s disordered eating, in my opinion. Of course, she gained a lot of the weight back when she had to stop taking it for surgery.

So sorry to hear this, Eddie1987. Vitamins and nutrients are important and tricky to maintain after weight loss surgery. I've been there, and it's a real process. Wishing you peace.

I am so sorry for your loss, Eddie1987!

This is probably why some doctors avoid prescribing glp1s to post-bariatric patients. Digestion is already slower, and the glp1s can make it even slower, which can be risky. Gastric surgery itself comes with risks. I hope that GLP-1s in the future can replace gastric surgery completely.

I’m really sorry, Eddie1987. I had a sleeve back in '10, converted to a bypass in '20, and then started Wegovy in '22. It's been life-changing for me, but it can be hard to find the desire to eat sometimes. And semaglutide can’t erase the damage we see because of society's views.

I hope you find peace. I lost my partner a few weeks ago, and I know it hurts and how much second-guessing you're probably doing.

I had a nutritionist appointment recently because my blood work showed some deficiencies. But that's not just an ozempic thing - it can also happen to people who have anorexia.

I’m so sorry for your loss, Eddie1987. It’s not common but it does happen. I knew someone else who had a similar issue. The last time I saw her she was waiting for a liver transplant. I moved and didn’t hear if she ever got one.

Food aversions are really weird. I can't stand ground beef now. Anyone else?

Yeah, something about ground beef is just off-putting. I have to rinse it really well after browning to get rid of the grease.

It's good to remember that even though the scale may not reflect it right away, you are still seeing results and making progress! Keep up the great work!

I used to love chicken thighs, but I can't even look at them anymore. Anyone else have foods they used to enjoy that they can't eat?

He used to love salmon, but now it makes him nauseous :(
