GLP-1s and Food Waste? Tips?

I've been taking Wegovy for about a year for my type 2. My numbers look great and I'm down 45 pounds which is awesome.

But I swear I'm throwing away so much food. I'm the only one in my house. It's getting to where I don't even want to buy groceries because it feels like such a waste! Eating out isn't any better. I wish restaurants had smaller portions. I try to make smaller versions of my favorite meals. Like I baked a little casserole dish of mac and cheese, had a small bowl, and I'm already sick of it. I stuck it in the freezer, hoping I'll want it later, but who knows.

How are you all dealing with this? I can't stand leftovers unless it's something amazing.

When I eat out, I usually just order appetizers. For dinner, I often have eggs. Or just a can of sardines and a pear. I don't really cook full meals anymore. Saves a ton on groceries.

I suggest planning out your meals for the week. Then you only buy what you need and can use the same ingredient in different ways. For example, you could use ground turkey in tacos, on a big salad, in pasta, or in a bowl of soup. Also, try buying the smaller packages of things. I also chop my veggies and freeze them so I can make soup whenever.

Going from 1mg every 6 days to 2mg every 5 days is a big step. At 2.4mg weekly that's a significant jump from your previous dose. Overshooting makes eating feel like a chore and the volume becomes impossible. Lower it back down if that's the case.

I'm eating more prepared stuff now, like single-serving yogurts and egg whites plus those frozen veggie burgers that come in packs of four. And huge packs of protein shakes from Costco. Even though I'm eating more processed foods, my labs are way better than when I only bought fresh food.

I started Ozempic a little while after my mom passed, so I have had to change the way I shop. The best thing you can do is be realistic about how much you're really going to eat. And be ready to adjust as needed.

I buy the smaller, more expensive packages of things or just one piece of fruit instead of a whole bag. I pay attention to what I always finish (yogurt, spinach, and berries) and what I don't. I keep the stuff I like on hand, along with back-up options that don't spoil (protein shakes, microwave meals, etc.).

I don't mind eating leftovers, so I will make big batches of things and freeze them. But only stuff that I know I will actually eat again.

I'm on Mounjaro, not Ozempic. I signed up for a meal kit service and I'm throwing away way less food. The portions are perfect and they only take a half hour to make. I only buy groceries if I'm having people over. Aside from coffee and almond milk, obviously.

The funniest thing for me is watching bags of chips go stale in my pantry. I used to always eat a lot of chips, usually the healthier kind. But now I almost never want them. I might eat a couple of chips and then not touch the bag again for a week. Before, the bag would be gone in just a few days!

I totally waste a ton of food. I stopped cooking a while back, which helped some, but stuff still goes bad before I eat it. I'm still saving money and I've lost 144lbs, so I guess it's worth it.

I make a big batch of food on Sundays and divide it into smaller portions. That way, I don't have to cook every day and I waste less. I also add spinach to most things after I heat it up to get in extra greens.

I like making a big pot of ground meat (if you eat meat) and adding beans and lentils to it. It lasts a long time and you can eat it in different ways (in rice bowls, in wraps, with pasta, or just by itself).

We buy less food, make soups and stews that freeze well, freeze extra in freezer bags, and eat it over the next few weeks. We make half sandwiches instead of full-sized ones. Cooking for two and freezing half cuts down on the food bill a lot. Buying four chicken thighs and freezing two or three, buying a roll of sausage and only cooking one patty, making mac and cheese and freezing single servings... it's not hard at all.

I've noticed coffee hits different now too. Anyone else? I drink like a cup and I'm wired. Before, I could easily have 3 cups in the morning. Maybe it's the eating less thing? Like I'm drinking coffee on an empty stomach.

OMG, yes! I used to drink coffee all day long. Now one cup makes me feel jittery and anxious. I may switch to decaf.
