GLP-1s and IBS - anyone else?

I deal with acid reflux and a digestive condition too. Been on heartburn medication for most of my life. Diagnosed with the digestive issue at twenty and I'm now 43.

Started the single-pathway medication back in August 2024 because of a hormone condition, prediabetes, and a fatty liver. Was nervous going in too. Especially since metformin was my first attempt and it made my gut symptoms far worse. Word going around about digestive upset and unpleasant-smelling burps had me pretty on edge going in.

But protecting my liver and blood sugar mattered more to me, so I went ahead. Increased the amount every month from the starting dose up to 2mg by the following January. Occasionally got a bit queasy after sweets or overeating, but never actually threw up.

The real win here, though, is that my digestive condition essentially cleared up. Went from needing the bathroom five or six times daily with urgency down to just a mild over-the-counter laxative mixed into my drink each morning to stay regular.

My bloodwork marker dropped from 6 to 4.7. Less exhaustion, mental fog, and pain overall. Fatty liver's improving, and I've lost 80 pounds.

Only reason I stopped was my coverage dropped it. These days I'm using the dual-action one through a weight program, planning to switch back to the original once I hit goal and I'm ready for maintenance.

Heard this directly from a treating physician, not the actual prescriber.

Both chronic gut conditions here are currently under control. Since things are well managed right now, it seemed like a reasonable window to try this drug class.

The GI specialist mentioned better tolerance and adherence in patients with similar gut conditions using certain other formulations in this drug class, and suggested switching. Weighing that option now! Also planning a short break in between just to let the gut settle after all the recent turmoil.
