GLP-1's for Longevity?

It's not specifically about GLP-1s, but a lot of people are taking Metformin alongside them, and Metformin's become a really popular 'longevity' supplement. There's already some chatter around the potential for GLP-1s to have anti-aging effects too, so it'll be interesting to see if these meds show any benefits in the aging process.

Yeah, these drugs are really cool if they treat your specific condition. I'm no doctor, but if we can make drugs improve chronic conditions, it makes you wonder what they can do for healthy people too. I always tell my kid that he'll see crazy medical advances. But it also makes you wonder if you want to live forever, especially after taking care of some really old folks lol

I've heard you can find some of these meds online if anyone's interested 🙂. I have diabetes, so I'm thinking about talking to my doctor about adding one. I'm already on metformin.

I had metabolic issues and just thinking about taking metformin makes my stomach hurt. That stuff messed up my digestive system. I felt so sick on it. But yeah, I've heard it can be an anti-aging drug if you can handle it.

Try the slow-release version if you haven't already. Insurance usually wants you to try the regular version first, but if you have problems with it, they'll usually approve the slow-release. It usually doesn't cause the same digestive issues.

My doctor's really against GLP-1s, but she prescribed metformin off-label. I agree, it destroyed my gut even the extended release version. Honestly, I never took it for more than a couple of weeks because of the issues. Maybe you need to adjust to it?

Most doctors hate anything new, especially if it's not from big pharma, and don't even think about suggesting it to them.

My rheumatologist was pretty annoyed when I told him in June 2024 that I'd started on Reta (and he's usually super chill and open to new things). But when I came back in December 2024 having dropped a bunch of weight, he actually clapped and asked me all about it so he could recommend it to other patients asking about GLP-1s.

But when I saw my main doc in September, I didn't say a word about Reta. Don't think I ever will.

Exactly! I only told my rheumatologist because I've known him since '95 and I know he leaves some things out of my record to protect me from insurance. I doubt a lot of doctors do that.

This is an interesting discussion! I've been on Ozempic for a while now and I've always been curious about how these diabetes drugs might have impact beyond just managing blood sugar.

The possible anti-aging effects are intriguing. I'm mainly using it for diabetes, but the idea that these drugs could also help with longevity is really exciting. I know Metformin has been talked about for years in terms of longevity, so it makes sense that other diabetes drugs are being looked at for their potential wider health impacts.

I always want to learn more. Has anyone read any in-depth studies about how these drugs might target aging? I'd love to understand the science behind these potential benefits.

For those who haven't seen it, it looks like the FDA is cracking down on compounding pharmacies making peptides.

Ugh, figures. The FDA always wants more control. They say it's for safety, but a lot of us know what's up. The underground HRT and peptide scene has gotten huge, and they don't like it.

Novo Nordisk had a big win in court that's going to limit a lot of the compounded Ozempic and Wegovy versions.

That's too bad. I wonder if it will drive the price of the name brand versions up even more.
