GLP-1s & Gas? 💨

Hong Kong Yanpep International
Gas on Mounjaro peaks in the first month as gut motility adjusts - small meals and avoiding trigger foods helps most.

Mounjaro needs several weeks to build up, so side effects showing up weeks into a new amount is pretty typical. That stomach discomfort could be gas or backup, I deal with both myself and lean on over-the-counter options to manage it.

Interesting to hear the pill form might carry more side effects, since I was actually bringing this up with my doctor after getting seriously ill on both injectable options (choking on thick undigested vomit, heartburn intense enough that I genuinely thought I was having a heart attack, even at the lowest dose of one of them). Similar reactions with the other. Nearly finished my nutrition credential and I'll be telling any future clients to think hard about the real possibility of rough side effects with these medications, however small the odds might be, because what happened to me was severe. Nobody gave me the chance to weigh an informed decision since I had no idea how sick I'd actually get. Figured it'd be mild nausea, some heartburn, maybe light vomiting. Had no idea. Genuinely believed I might die from what felt like cardiac symptoms. Had I known, I would've said no thanks and looked for another way to lose the weight)
We briefly discussed the oral option.

But given how badly the injectables hit me, I'm not eager to gamble on whatever side effects the pills might bring either.

Vomiting and diarrhea started several months into 10mg for me. It seems tied to stomach motility, since Mounjaro slows it, yet mine just stops. In the end it comes back up, with recognizable bits of food from one to two days prior. I stepped down from 10mg to 7.5mg each week, then to 5mg roughly every 5 to 6 days, and at that level I get only mild nausea that passes fast. I plan to retry 7.5mg once this box of 5's is finished, and my doctor hopes a break will let me return to the dose I was stable on. Another option we have discussed is adding a medicine that *increases* stomach motility, dosed solely on the day following my injection rather than regularly. I'm not wild about it, but it's a fallback.
