Losing weight FAST?!

Hey all,

I've been taking Wegovy since last fall, around November, and I'm on 1.7mg now. I wasn't really paying attention to my diet at first. I even thought I might've gained a little, but at my checkup in February, my doctor said I'd actually dropped about 10 pounds since October! Started at 305, now I'm around 282.

I decided to get serious about my eating habits a couple of weeks ago and started tracking everything in MyNetDiary with a goal of losing 2 pounds each week. I'm sticking to the calorie recommendations from the app (started at 2000, now at 1700), and I'm making sure to get around 100g of protein every day. I don't feel hungry, and I feel pretty good overall. I'm still eating foods I like, just smaller portions. I also started taking ADHD meds a few days ago, which has lowered my appetite even more, especially during the day. I've had to really push myself to eat more than 1000 calories a day. I'm guessing this will even out as my body adjusts to the medication.

Before, I never ate breakfast or lunch. I'd usually have 3-4 coffees during the day, maybe grab some fast food or high-fat snacks for lunch, eat dinner, and then binge eat until bedtime. Since starting the ADHD meds I don’t like taking them on an empty stomach, so I've been having a handful of nuts and some fruit for breakfast, a couple of coffees, lots of water, and a protein shake for lunch. Then, I try to hit my calorie goals with dinner and a snack before bed. This past week, I've been losing about a pound every day, and everything I'm reading online says that's too much. My next doctor's appointment is still a few weeks away. I'm happy to be losing weight, of course, but I don't want to do it in an unhealthy way. Should I try to eat more calories? Should I just wait and see if it slows down? Or should I just be happy that the meds are working?

I know I should probably have something more substantial than a protein shake (frozen fruit, a splash of juice, water, and 2 scoops of protein) for lunch, but I can't even think about eating anything else while the ADHD meds are at their strongest. Any suggestions would be really appreciated!

Since you just started ADHD meds around the same time, your doctor might need to reduce your Wegovy dose if the rapid weight loss continues. Stimulants can also suppress your appetite, and you don't want to put too much stress on your body. @Dad are you seeing the same doctor for both the Wegovy and ADHD meds?

I started at about 325 around Christmas, and I'm at 284 now. I haven't noticed a lot of muscle loss like some people talk about, but I am a little concerned about it. I do see a lot of fat going away. I don't think losing weight quickly is necessarily a bad thing if you aren't only losing muscle.

You'll be all set. I dropped weight FAST in the beginning. A lot of it's just water leaving your body as things change. It's a good thing. Keep it up! You seem to be eating right, so chill. People don't just die from not having enough calories right away, especially considering how much we have stored in our bodies.

It's probably just water weight from eating fewer calories. It'll probably slow down soon. As long as you're feeling okay and getting enough protein, you're probably fine. Might be a good idea to call your doctor just to be sure, though. Don't wait weeks if you're worried.

Yeah, early losses are usually water weight. Like @Erin_94 mentioned, it tends to slow down. I know it's healthier for it to be a gradual thing anyway.

Losing a pound a day over a short period, especially when you're starting at a higher weight, isn't unheard of. You're probably losing water, particularly if you’re eating healthier and cutting back on salt.

What's more important is what you're eating. If you're consistently eating less than 1000 calories while on both Wegovy and a stimulant, that’s pretty extreme. Just because you feel okay right now doesn't mean it’s good for you in the long run.

You don't need to freak out, but I wouldn't intentionally keep your calorie intake that low. Even small changes like a bigger lunch or incorporating healthy fats could help stabilize things.

It’s a good idea to message your doctor before your next appointment to let them know what’s going on.

Glad to hear you are checking in with the doc! How long have you been on the Wegovy? I've heard of people staying at very low doses for a long time if it's working for them.

I started it around November. Still on 1.7mg. I guess it's working, maybe too well, haha.

Yeah, @under-construction, I saw one lady say she's been on a low dose of another GLP-1 for months! If it's working, I guess there's no point going higher!
That's encouraging! I'm hoping I can stay at a lower dose too. Less side effects!

Prior users re-titrating Wegovy often skip the 0.25mg step and move through lower doses in 2-3 weeks instead of 4 - receptor familiarity means the side effect ceiling is established. The scale usually takes 2-4 weeks to restart after resuming, even at a working dose.

That's fast loss so the hunger makes sense. Once you get closer to your target weight, things usually slow down and feel more manageable.
