Meds & marriage problems?

Has anybody else on these meds, like that Mounjaro, dropped a ton of weight and then suddenly had mood swings that wrecked their home life? I was on 2.5mg for a month, then 5mg for a couple months, and lost a fifth of my weight. Now my wife and kid are gone after 12 years, and I'm out a couple grand at the med company and the solicitor.

Weird mood stuff, worried all the time, horny, kinda impulsive and just wanting big changes. Doing dumb stuff with cash and emotions. Super not me!

Didn't want this! And don't try to sell me anything, because I'm now broke lol

I can't say much about these personal problems or how GLP's play into them, but some friends I've known for 15 years split up because of cheating that started after one of them went down over 100lbs on that one brand of Mounjaro.

I don't know if the drug made things happen. I've known others to lose major weight without GLP's and get hit with relationship drama, so I think it might be how the body changes, like hormones and confidence, that come from losing weight.

I see how these meds change some cravings (and that's been written about), so maybe we still have a lot to learn about how they mess with the brain, actions, feelings, and so on.

Sorry you're dealing with this.

Any chance of a history of mania in your family? Either way, issues with adapting to changes (good or bad) is often linked to anxiousness or feeling down.

Big mood swings can happen when you drop weight. Your body goes through hormone changes and stress that can make you act different than you normally would. It's why doctors want people to lose extra weight slowly. It's a tough thing to deal with and it could help to find a therapist or a support group to work through these changes.

She was on the same med, with nobody to back her up. Lost about the same weight, but on a bigger dose. We talked a bit about her mood, but never thought it was bad news. Then she stopped saying much and got anxious and boom - just vanished like a bad smell!

It's wild, because our kid was also stressed, stealing snacks at school and getting in trouble, probably because of the food changes at home.

They don't care about that stuff as a side effect!

Thanks for the replies.

Sending some love your way. 12 is a hard age, they're getting wise to things like social cues and relationships, but can't always say what's up. Mine's almost 14 and is getting better expressing herself and we can talk it out. Some years ago, she'd just shut down and not cause a fuss.

You didn't say how old you are, but if your wife is past 35-38 then perimenopause might be happening. It's like puberty in reverse: it winds down over a decade usually. I've known women in their 40s go straight from baby-making to tough peri. The drop in estrogen during peri and menopause can change a woman's life (I'm 48) and there are choices but finding info is hard like it is for GLP-1s.

If I'm wrong, I'll go away now. I want to help, and most women don't know about peri. (Doctors aren't much help.)

Hope things turn around… you've got a lot going on.

I've read reports that mounjaro can cause feeling down, lack of care for anything, etc and if that's how you feel, come off the drug and things should get better over time. Hope for the best

A personality shift so big you know you're taking strange chances, and you're having bad relationship issues... See a doctor about that, IMHO.

Maybe it's just the drug, and you're having side effects.

Or maybe it's something more.

I think what you're dealing with is past anything someone online can help with, unless they know your whole situation and have some letters after their name. I feel bad for you.

I was also seeing the same thing. Guys and women in their late 30s to late 40s going a bit mad. Perimenopause in women, mid-life crisis in men. It could be part of it.

Hubby is getting older, he's been with me for years. We try to stay healthy - he works out every day i've known him, even though I tell him to rest. He doesn't take any meds or peptides. His personality hasn't changed besides stuff like 'get off my lawn'.

I agree something in these can cause not caring about things. It's like depression, I've been diagnosed with both. When I started sema, my first GLP-1, I quit after three weeks.

It depends on your body. I read one article that these might treat depression! Like any medicine - 'it all depends' if it's a poison or a cure.

If it's a name brand, ask your doctor. See a shift in yourself ... get some changes going, to improve things. It's huge. A healthy mind in a healthy body is a great thing.

I read that too. People saying Tirz made their moods so much better. I wish it did for me. Haven't seen a mood change at all.

I hear ya, CareGreat. I've dropped like, 40 pounds since January using sema, and I'm so happy I found it. I've always had anxiety and used food to cope. Now I have control and want to eat good food, but still treat myself sometimes. It's a game changer.

I keep seeing BMI mentioned -- isn't it kinda messed up? Like, someone could be ripped but the BMI still says they're not "normal."

BMI is a population-level metric, not a personal one. For tracking large groups of people it's directionally useful. For individuals, other measures are more accurate.

Thanks for all the advice. I'm starting to realize that even if the meds are helping with weight, might be playing games with my brain. I need to talk to a doctor sooner rather than later. Appreciate it.
