Mounjaro AND Metformin = 🤢?

Hey all, feeling super sick from Mounjaro and wondering if the Metformin is making it worse? I stopped Mounjaro for like, a month, but now I'm thinking maybe ditching the Metformin completely would help with the tummy troubles? Been on Metformin for years, but it didn't really kick in until I started Mounjaro. My doc wants me to stay on 2000mg of Metformin ER (1000 morning/night) while on Mounjaro. I had major diarrhea and then started throwing up. I was at 7.5mg Mounjaro, but even at 2.5mg, I'm having issues. I cut the Metformin down to 1000mg myself, but it didn't help. Think just taking Mounjaro alone would be better? I'm just so worried about the nausea and vomiting. It's awful.

Wait, your doctor prescribed both? I'd definitely message their office about that. Changing medication dosages without letting them know isn't the best idea. And those side effects sound pretty intense – maybe they need to adjust something? Diarrhea AND nausea at only 2.5mg Mounjaro sounds like you're not tolerating it well. Probably best to get advice from your doctor since they know your whole history.

Ugh, my endo isn't super helpful. They act like I'm making up the side effects. They want me to come in, but there aren't any openings for like, two months.

Do they have a nurse line or online portal? Try messaging or calling and explain it's urgent. Those are pretty common side effects with Mounjaro, so if they're blowing you off, maybe it's time to find a new doctor. If that doesn't work, I can try to help, and maybe some other medical professionals here can chime in.

They won't give any more advice through the portal. No phone calls either. Only my regular doctor will. I was just there in September and have another appointment in March, but they won't advise me about anything except lowering the Mounjaro dose.

That's awful! Seriously, awful. So, you need help, but you can't get an appointment for months, and they won't help you over the phone or online? What are you supposed to do? That's terrible patient care.

What dose of Mounjaro did you start at? And at what dose did the side effects become too much to handle?

How much food are you eating before you take the Metformin? I'm on Zepbound 7.5mg and Metformin ER, 1500mg. I get loose stools sometimes, but it's better if I take the Metformin with food in my stomach. If I can't eat a meal because of the Zepbound, my doctor said to skip the Metformin. Lowering your dose, like they suggested, is probably a good idea for now. But you should definitely push your doctor's office about this. It's their job to manage these side effects. If not, look for a new doctor. If they refuse to help, document everything in case you have insurance issues later. Of the two meds, Mounjaro has the biggest impact on diabetes and other markers. Metformin is an older drug with smaller effects, and you said it hasn't helped much. But if Mounjaro is causing intolerable side effects, maybe it's not the right drug for you. Diarrhea and vomiting can lead to dehydration.

I think it could be either one causing the issues. I take Metformin for diabetes, and it can definitely cause loose stools, nausea, and stomach upset. I switched to the slow-release version, and it made a huge difference. I don't have any experience with Retatrutide yet, but I wanted to share my experience with Metformin. If you want to keep taking it, I'd recommend switching to the slow-release version.

I've been researching tirz at 7.5mg every 5 days. No problems whatsoever. But I've heard horror stories from others about stomach issues when they added metformin. I'm an acupuncturist, not an MD, but most of my patients on metformin report GI issues.

I totally get your struggle with stomach problems from Mounjaro and Metformin. While dropping Metformin might seem like a good idea, I recommend talking to your doctor before changing anything. From my experience with diabetes meds, the combination can be tricky. I'm on both Metformin ER (2000mg at bedtime) and a GLP-1, and I worked with my doctor to manage the side effects. My fasting glucose has improved, dropping from 115-120 to 85-90. Your doctor's 2000mg Metformin ER recommendation sounds standard, but if you're having persistent vomiting/diarrhea, you need to discuss alternatives. Options to consider:

* Adjusting the Metformin dose
* Switching to extended-release
* Changing the timing
* Trying a different combo

Keep a detailed symptom diary to discuss with your doctor. They can help you find a balance that manages your diabetes while minimizing the side effects.

Oh wow, this thread's from January! I haven't been back since February 3rd. Hopefully, your post helps someone else.

I'm wondering if anyone has tried a sermorelin/ipamorelin stack *while* also taking a GLP-1 like Mounjaro? I've heard good things about sermorelin for boosting growth hormone, but unsure about combining it with weight loss meds.

Yeah, I found that eating something substantial with it helps, but honestly, even then, sometimes it just doesn't sit right. I'd rather skip it than deal with the aftermath.

I agree with Busy-Gal, it's time to find somebody else. It's important we advocate for ourselves, even if it means switching up our healthcare providers! If your doctor won't listen to your concerns, it's time for a new doctor.
