Muscle loss on GLP-1 isn't the whole story

Hey Everyone, continuing our FNCE conference insights series on this Friday. let's get right into it.

Yesterday we talked about losing muscle on GLP-1, specifically…
- how losing a little is actually expected, a normal part of weight loss by ANY means,
- how its especially normal in larger losses where your body no longer NEEDS that extra muscle to carry around the extra weight anymore,
- how it can often be coupled with improvements in mobility and physical activity levels,
- and how it's not necessarily a bad thing… although we do need to do our part to minimize it (with eating enough protein/calories and doing regular strength training).

Today I want to go a little deeper on the muscle loss part. Because there are a couple important things i forgot to mention.

1) there are MULTIPLE domains of muscle health that we need to take into consideration when we talk about muscle:
- muscle quantity (mass),
- muscle composition (quality),
- muscle specific force (strength),
- muscle function (how well your muscles actually perform tasks),
- and load capacity model (do your muscles have enough capacity to handle the physical demands placed on your body).

I know that was a lot, lol and could deserve its own deep dive. But the crux of it Is that muscle mass decreasing during GLP-1 weight loss is NOT the only thing we should be caring about. We should care about preserving or improving muscle strength, quality, and physical function.

2) here's my take on why everyone all over social media constantly talks about muscle loss being so bad when someone loses weight on a GLP-1: it's rooted in stigma. Maybe some have genuinely good intentions but some people just wanna hate on us for using a tool to improve our health. Just my 2 cents.

Talk to you tomorrow; peace! ✌️

PS- Keep saying you will start taking your nutrition seriously but not getting around to it? Eating on point a few days of the week then it all goes out the window as the shot wears off? No problem, I've got you. Shot Meals lays out what you need to do to get unstuck.
