My GLP-1 Victory Lap!

Hey everyone, figured I'd share some wins after my recent check-up. I'm 66, started my journey on Jan 30th, 2024. Initial weight: 257.3 lbs. Now: 142.8 lbs.

BMI went from 45.6 (Class III Obese) to 25.3 (still overweight, darn BMI!)

Body fat: from a scary 52.2% down to 22.3%

Muscle mass: Started at 65.3 lbs, now at 58 lbs.

So, I've shed around 7 lbs of muscle during a 114 lb weight loss, which is only a 6% muscle loss. From what I've gathered, many GLP-1 users see 15-20% muscle loss.

Visceral fat area: from 243.5 cm² to 72.8 cm² (Healthy is under 100 cm²).

Also, my A1C is 4.7, triglycerides are 49, HDL is 66, and LDL is 97.

My high sensitivity c-reactive protein test (inflammation marker) was less than 0.300 mg/L – basically undetectable risk for heart issues, which is great since heart disease runs in my family, and I have a heart murmur.

I ran my numbers (blood work, scans, VO2 Max) through some bio-age calculators, and here’s what I got. Chronological age: 66 years, 7 months.

Biological age: 53 years.

Body composition age: 45-50.

Fitness age: 48-50.

So, feeling like I've shaved 15-20 years off my age.

Still on this ride, currently on maintenance, hoping to lower my dose to 2.5 soon and maybe do shots twice a month by year's end.

Hoping my story inspires you all to stick with it and live long, healthy lives!

All the best!

This is wonderful news! You are amazing, keep up your hard work! I am so proud of you! You look fantastic! Thanks for sharing your experience.

Congrats! Thanks for sharing your story; you look incredible! I'm hoping to get approved to start next month and am excited to see what happens. Your success is truly inspiring. ❤️

Excellent job! ❤️ Bug-IRL, do you have a plan for reducing the shots? Will you coordinate with the doctor? I'm worried about stopping once I hit my goal. I have been on 5mg for almost a year and am worried about maintenance.

You look wonderful! Some sources suggest doctors prefer older patients to maintain a slightly higher BMI, around 25-27. I'm ignoring that, though, as I reached a BMI of 21.7. I'm almost 78.

Were there specific things you believe helped you preserve more muscle mass, Bug-IRL?
Good question! Honestly, I focused on protein intake and strength training. I aimed for at least 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight (the weight I *wanted* to be, not my starting weight!). I lift weights 3 times per week. Nothing crazy, just the basics.

I've heard GLP-1s can also help with blood pressure. Anyone have experience with that? I've been dealing with hypertension for a while now.

It's likely due to the weight loss associated with GLP-1s, not necessarily the drug itself, that lowers blood pressure. I've seen many patients reduce or even eliminate their BP meds after losing weight.

Interesting about the muscle mass... I've been reading about GLP-1s affecting hormone levels too. Has anyone looked into how these meds might affect testosterone?
