Ozempic & the Big 'C' - what's working?

For many years, predating my venture into Ozempic, I battled chronic constipation. The situation escalated to the point of daily rectal bleeding, diagnosed by a specialist as both internal and external hemorrhoids. A procedure addressed the internal ones, coupled with preventative measures for the future.

His main advice? Commence a regimen of psyllium husk.

While Metamucil offers this, obtaining it directly proves more economical. Health stores and online retailers like Amazon stock it.

Available in both powder and capsule form, I opt for the powder.

My doctor prescribed a twice-daily dosage of two heaping spoonfuls, once at breakfast and again at dinner. My method involves placing the spoonfuls directly into my mouth, followed by a gulp of water. I agitate the mixture to form a paste, which I then ingest just before commencing my meal.

For me, it's been a miracle. Bowel movements have become effortless and regular, without the slightest discomfort.

Hoping this resonates with someone...or many! : )

A word of caution: while a spoonful of psyllium in juice or water is acceptable, please refrain from introducing a dry spoonful directly into your mouth. It rapidly absorbs moisture, saliva, and water, expanding and forming a mucilaginous substance that can pose a choking hazard.

I agree with FiberFam. Putting the powder in your mouth dry and washing it down is a risky move for your digestive tract.

Psyllium husk needs lots of water to swell up and work correctly. The fiber can cause blockages if there is not enough water available.

It all boils down to fiber. Sustained fiber consumption, irrespective of source, is key. I like chia seeds in my morning oatmeal or making chia pudding as a snack.

I also enjoy dried dates, usually 1-3 a day. Constipation is rare for me since my diet focuses on fiber-rich foods. Prioritize these foods, minimizing the need for supplemental products. A target of 30g of fiber daily is a good starting point, increasing gradually.

Lentils, apples, blueberries, avocado, broccoli, sweet potatoes, and almonds are some of my favorites.

Raisin Bran, dried plums, a small dosage of mag citrate, pure unfiltered juice from orchard mills, pineapple, corn ... I'm a bit sensitive to milkproducts so, when things get horrible I eat a small amount of soft serve ice cream 🍦.

An important note: After locating a formula that works, keep at it so that you are having regular bowel movements (whatever that means for you). Ozempic slows down your system, and the longer stool sits inside, the drier and harder it becomes. Getting constipated and waiting to deal with it will cause problems.

My routine: magnesium bisglycinate; 40-60g of fiber (beans, legumes, fruits, vegetables, chia seeds, whole grains); morning caffeine; exercise and movement.

My 'emergency' routine if I get constipated: magnesium citrate; blueberries, raisins, dried plums, or cherries; things with sugar alcohol like mannitol and sorbitol.

Mix-Good - Ingesting it dry like that without mixing with 8 oz of water is unsafe. You could cause a blockage.

Plus you are taking way too much. Max for the entire day is 2 TBSP. You are doing twice that.

Your current method is going to cause problems for you.

I've been taking psyllium husk capsules for about a week to support my gut while using ozempic. I was taking magnesium citrate and a super enzyme pill to help with regular bowel movements, but things were still not fully formed. Once I started the fiber pills, I had two normal BMs...just like before ozempic. Since my diet lacks enough natural fiber, the pills help fill the void.

If you're not a fan of the other suggestions, try chewing sugar-free gum made with sorbitol or mannitol. They draw water into the colon. Chew a few pieces each day, and keep increasing until you get the desired results (a BM only every 3 days is fine, so long as it's soft and you aren’t having cramps, bloating, nausea or other pains).

If the poop gets too soft just add a fiber gummy or something like MiraLAX.

I mix 1-2 tablespoons of psyllium husk in lemon water, shake it quickly, and drink it all at once. I switch between psyllium husk and chia seeds. The psyllium version tastes like pulpy lemonade.

I hadn't heard that Mix-Good was putting the psyllium in his mouth dry! That sounds super dangerous! I know someone whose IBS went away completely on Ozempic. So weird how it affects everyone differently.

Has anyone else experienced increased gas while taking Ozempic? I went on a date last week, and it was mortifying! I couldn't stop farting. The pharmacist said it's a common side effect as your body adjusts. Hopefully, it goes away soon!

the first-week constipation severity is something that doesn't come up prominently in the standard side effect discussions but seems to catch a lot of people off guard - the sudden drop in motility combined with reduced food volume is a fast combination. having clinical experience with bowel management is a real advantage for knowing when to intervene and how aggressively versus waiting it out. the description most people use for the severe end of the spectrum is unfortunately accurate
