Restarting GLP-1s: My bad experience

Hi all. Started sema last year at a low dose, like 0.2mg per week. Got it from a compounding place. Eventually I switched to the lyophilized stuff. Each time I upped the dose, I'd hurl once, feel queasy for half a day, then I felt great. Worth it for the weight loss, right?

I shed just over 35 pounds, got to 2.5mg every 6 days and then kinda stopped losing. Then I ran out, stopped cold turkey like 8 months ago. Gained back about 25 pounds, unfortunately.

But here's my warning.

I found a 5mg vial in the back of the fridge on Sunday. I mixed it with 100 units of bacteriostatic water and injected 25 units (so, 1.25mg sema). Sunday night I threw up my dinner, and then dry heaved every few hours. Like, a dozen times. Super awful, headache like crazy.

I haven't kept anything down since Sunday noon until just now, Wednesday afternoon. Trying to drink water. I'll try some food in a bit, but I'm really not hungry. I've lost 8 pounds since Sunday. This isn't safe or fun.

So, WARNING: If you stop Semaglutide and then restart, don't assume you can start at half the dose you were at. Start much lower. I messed up.

PS. Still waiting on my terz...

I'm starting to think you need major lifestyle adjustments alongside these GLP-1s for them to really work long-term. The objective shouldn't be losing weight at the expense of constant nausea.

There's no reason to take too much when you have the ability to measure more gradually!

Next time, I'd try a tiny amount and then up it in small steps like a day or two later, after seeing how you feel.

I'm actually glad to hear this, @ZepBounder, even though I'm sorry you had to go through it! It kinda shows that you can cycle off for a bit and your receptors will get refreshed/reset.

It doesn't necessarily prove the receptor thing, @Trail_05. It just shows that if you stop, you have to restart at a lower dose to avoid the bad side effects. Tirzepatide -- which I know more about -- seems to keep weight off for longer periods, like years. And people are often lighter after three years than after one year.

Compounding pharmacies are all over the place. Some are great, some... not so much. There's been some shady stuff going on. I wonder if that's part of the price issues folks are seeing with name-brand stuff.

It's so frustrating. I have insulin-resistant PCOS, and a tiny dose of sema is the only thing that's helped in almost two decades of trying. It's like $900 every six weeks, but I pay it 'cause it's the only thing that works. Nothing else is covered or affordable. I'm glad someone is looking into it!

Hey, @Heal-Fam, have you looked into going to Canada? Someone mentioned they get their Ozempic for way cheaper there. Might be worth the trip!

I know someone who tried Ozempic and it didn't work for their diabetes. They switched to Rybelsus (the pill form) and it was a game changer. Their blood sugars are finally under control. They didn't lose a ton of weight, but their A1C went way down.

Thanks for being real about your experience. You shared your truth and that matters. On a forum like this you'll get all kinds of feedback - some will vibe with you, others won't, but keep that honesty coming.

If you're a real dermatologist I'm concerned for your patients. You're trying to cause harm. Provide proper credentials so people can sue you after your bad advice damages their skin. Maybe take a drive and chill out. Your lived experience is just an opinion anyway. Everyone has opinions.

I mix a little sema into my tirz sometimes and it really helps with food noise. That said, the trials showed weight loss tapers around 72 weeks, so you might just be hitting your ceiling.

100mcg morning & night for me, plus one more after workouts. been like a week so far. also doing CJC no dac alongside it. starting small to see how things go.
