Reta dose increase = bonk?

Hey everyone,

So, I did a thing... I bumped up my Reta dose today, going from 2mg to 3mg. About six hours later, I felt like I'd just finished a crazy hard workout. All shaky, dizzy, and super nauseous. Had to down some pie and ice cream to get it under control, which took about half an hour. Anyone else experience this? Maybe I increased the dose too fast?

I thought something else happened when I read the subject line... No, I haven't "bonked" from the injection. Dehydration or low blood sugar is probably it. I've noticed it happen sometimes during the week, not right after the shot.

A blood glucose meter is useful to have, and they're not too expensive. You can get a kit online or at a drugstore.

Protein shakes are good for electrolytes like sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium, but they don't hydrate as well as electrolyte drinks or coconut water. I use both, especially after waking up. I never had dehydration issues before starting GLP-1s.

If you get more nausea, ask your doctor about Zofran for your medication.

I think you all are right about the blood sugar. It felt like my glucose just tanked hard. I think I raised the dose too quickly and injected too close together (twice weekly for me).

I've also noticed I need to keep my carb intake up on Reta. Reta + low carb isn't working for me.

Totally! I stopped Reta so I could train for a half marathon because I kept hitting a wall on long runs (even on a tiny 0.5mg dose). It worked, and now that the race is over, I'm back on Reta.

I've always had low blood pressure and sometimes pass out if I stand up too fast. I think I might have low blood sugar issues too, but I haven't confirmed it. I'm thinking about getting a glucose monitor. Some people (maybe with low BP or hypoglycemia) might be more likely to "bonk" on Reta.

Interesting! Sounds like you might need to stop it for serious training, at least for some of us.

I don't know if I've ever heard "bonked" used that way before. I usually think of someone hitting their head! 🤪

For the first few months on Tirz, I had similar episodes that were almost always because I forgot to eat or drink enough, or something I ate or drank didn't agree with me. Once I got a better routine and made sure to include electrolytes and protein when I hadn't eaten enough, those episodes became rare.

I'm not sure a 1mg dose increase (even though it's 50% more than before) would have such a big effect beyond the usual side effects.

I agree on the carb thing... Reta needs carbs to work right. I switched from Tirz a while back, and I eat carbs like normal. My weight's been stable since.

Assuming you're not diabetic and not on other meds that lower blood sugar, GLP meds don't usually cause hypoglycemia. They can if you're on other diabetes meds. These symptoms are common during weight loss and are often from fluid and electrolyte issues, plus low blood pressure from less blood volume because of those fluid problems. Most electrolytes come from food, so you might have low potassium and sodium, which you need to maintain blood volume, if you're eating less. GLPs can also make you drink less. So, sit or lie down if you're dizzy to avoid falling, and eat food and drink something.

My brother was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Last night, we used his glucose meter to check our blood sugar after drinking - he was 9.4, and I was 2.9 (both in nmols). I'm on 8mg of Reta, split into two 4mg doses twice a week, but I haven't had any low blood sugar symptoms. Maybe something to watch out for going forward.

I agree with the blood sugar thesis, just felt like my glucose levels crashed and burned hard. Interesting. Think I ramped my doseage too quickly and injected to close together (I do 2 injections/week).

I also switched to injecting twice a week, and it seems to help keep my blood sugar more stable. Talk to your doctor about a split dose schedule. Also, I’ve heard about BPC-157/TB-500 blends, but not sure about dosage recommendations… maybe someone else here knows?

Thanks for all the tips everyone! Just an update, I think going forward I am going to stay at 2mg for a while. No need to rush this process, especially if it leads to feeling terrible.
