Tirzepatide: A New Weight Loss Option?

Hey everyone, I watched a video about tirzepatide for weight loss and wanted to share the main points:

* The study looked at how well tirzepatide, a drug for type 2 diabetes, worked for weight loss in adults who were overweight or obese but didn't have diabetes.
* It was a phase 3 trial with over 2500 adults. Some got different doses of tirzepatide (5, 10, or 15 mg), while others got a placebo, along with lifestyle changes.
* The group taking tirzepatide saw much bigger weight reductions compared to the placebo group. The average weight loss was 15% to 21% with tirzepatide versus only 3% with the placebo. More people on tirzepatide also lost at least 5% of their weight by week 72.
* The most frequent side effects were digestive issues, like feeling sick to the stomach, having loose stool, and constipation. These usually didn't last long and were mild, mostly happening when the dose was increased.
* The study concluded that all doses of tirzepatide led to significant and lasting weight loss in obese adults without diabetes. You can find the complete results on the NEJM website.

I've been on a similar medication, semaglutide, for about six months now. Started around 215 lbs and I'm hovering around 195 currently. The GI issues were real at first, but they definitely subsided after a few weeks as my body adjusted. It's been a game changer for managing my appetite.

Important to remember that these meds are tools, not magic bullets. Lifestyle changes, like diet and exercise, are still key for long-term success. The trial Nicky82 mentions included lifestyle intervention along with the medication.

It's interesting to note the mechanism of action here. Tirzepatide is a dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist. This differs from semaglutide, which is solely a GLP-1 RA. The dual action may contribute to the greater weight loss observed in the tirzepatide trials. More research is definitely needed to fully understand the long-term effects and benefits.

Hey @SlightlyLess88, how is it going with keeping up your muscle? I just started on week 3 of sema and am a bit nervous about losing muscle mass while losing weight. Any tips?

Good question! I bumped up my protein intake and started lifting weights at the gym 3 times a week. Also, BCAA supplements really helped. I've noticed fat loss more than muscle loss, thankfully.

It's awesome to see people having success with these meds. I've been struggling to lose those last 20 pounds after having my second kid. I've been exercising like crazy and watching what I eat, but the scale just won't budge! Maybe this is something I should look into.

Congrats to everyone making progress on these meds! I started Ozempic back in March at 213 lbs and this morning I weighed in at 190. Officially overweight, not obese! My insurance just stopped covering it, so I'm switching to Liraglutide next week. Wish me luck!

That's fantastic progress, @Sage28! Good luck with the switch to Liraglutide. Hopefully, it works just as well for you.

I understand that many of you are excited to get below 200lbs, and I think it is great that you are happy. But it is important to temper expectations. I'm at 204, and my weight loss is down to only 2 pounds a month now.

Same boat. Switched from sema to mounjaro after hitting a plateau, lost 30 lbs first couple months but now at 2.5→5 doses and the cravings are back strong. Gaining instead of losing. Starting to wonder if I'm just resistant to these things.

Get a better doctor. Mine gets it, even knows I'm doing the China stuff and prescribed Wegovy anyway since insurance refused. Super kind guy, never with the eat less move more lecture. Knows obesity is chronic.

Hitting a plateau is normal in weight loss journeys. Doubt tirzepatide quit - happens on brand names too. Had a similar stretch, then just when I thought upping dose was needed, loss restarted. Bodies need adjustment time.

Ten milligrams is where I finally saw real effects. Tirzepatide shows more consistent weight loss overall and better tolerance for some people. Responded fast to low-dose semaglutide myself.

Everyone's different. Didn't see anything until week 4 or 5. Then roughly 1 lb weekly except 3 weeks I gained. Eight months at 15mg, 34 lbs lost. Slow but zero exercise.

been on mounjaro since september plus 3 months on wegovy before that. averaging 0.7lb per week, around 1.25kg monthly. down 37lbs in 11 months - way less than you. you're doing great, enjoy the win!
