Wellbutrin + Naltrexone Experiences?

I've had solid effects with sema, settling around 7mg each week. In half a year:

BMI 34 → 29
Bad Cholesterol 130 → 100
A1C 5.5 → 5.1
BP 130/90 → 120/80 (both with drugs)
Thyroid 4.5 → 3.8
All looking good. However, my link to food is still messed up. When under pressure, I still binge eat junky sweets—just less than I used to. I want to address this behavior.

It looks like my binging/sugar cravings are part of a larger motivation issue. I tend to get sidetracked easily, put things off, and struggle with low energy sometimes. I've often been told I might have ADHD, or be a bit manic, etc. I suspect that food problems are a symptom of this.

I'm not thinking about trying tesofensine because the potential for feeling hostile and heart problems worry me. I've read that wellbutrin with naltrexone might cut down on cravings and can assist with losing weight. Any thoughts on this combo?

I know what you mean.
I bet I have some undiagnosed ADHD.
And yeah I take Contrave regularly, at the moment just one pill in the morning.
It does something different by acting on the MC pathway, which affects hunger and feeling full.
I am not sure it will cause significant weight loss by itself, but it's good for cravings, as you said.
For lots of people, sema isn't a strong appetite suppressant.
Anyway, congrats on the improvements!

Remember that both of these meds are mental health drugs. Naltrexone is for cravings in general- approved for alcoholism and opioid addiction, and sometimes for gambling problems.

Wellbutrin is an NDRI antidepressant, also used for seasonal depression and to help people stop smoking. It's sometimes used for ADHD.

Together, they make Contrave, which is for weight loss.

Just be aware you're dealing with psych meds and potential side effects- anxiety, thoughts of suicide, etc. Know yourself. I wouldn't use bupropion unless it was prescribed by my psychiatrist.

To use bupropion, I needed to be on a mood stabilizer and anti-anxiety meds. Without them, I couldn't sleep and had major panic. Naltrexone caused a deep depression almost immediately, so I stopped using it.

They didn't work for me at all. I just ate and ate on wellbutrin. also know wellbutrin can make you lose hair. LDN (low dose naltrexone - lower than contrave combo) is supposed to have many health benefits so I should just use what I have left for that.

I’ve written before about my experiences using Naltrexone and tirz and how they compare at fighting my cravings for alcohol (tirz wins). A long time ago I also used bupropion as Chantix to quit smoking. Not a good experience - weird dreams, waking up confused. When I realized that BP was combining those two (as Contrave), I was immediately concerned.

If you need to kill sugar cravings, I’ve found tirz to be the best thing (in this researcher’s personal experience.)

I think you're mixing up Zyban (Wellbutrin) with Chantix (Varenicline). Chantix is the one that gives you crazy dreams. I've tried both; Wellbutrin just made me more irritable and my friends told me to smoke again, and I stopped smoking for almost a year with Chantix which made me dream weird for a few weeks!

I've been on LDN for almost 5 years as a partial treatment for long-covid. It's helped a lot with brain fog. It's also given me vivid, colorful (but not scary) dreams. I take 4.5 mg right before bed.

Interesting, thanks everyone for the replies. I'm not hearing anyone say that they tried contrave and thought it was super helpful. I know its a small group here.

I personally have never used either bupropion or naltrexone, so I'm trying bupropion by itself first to see how I react. An old housemate had some Wellbutrin XR 150 mg left over, and I've been taking it for about a week.

There might be a slight improvement in my motivation and energy, but overall I don't notice much. No changes to my hunger. I understand the naltrexone is important here, since it reduces a reward pathway that bupropion triggers.

Before I tried tirz, I was on a bupropion/naltrexone/metformin mix. I lost a few lbs, nothing major, but I had to quit the naltrexone since it had bad side effects. Like, half my face went numb. The doctor said it was a known side effect and would stop, but I didn't want to continue to see if it would. Good luck with what you try, and I hope it doesn't happen to you.

Not sure if you were asking me, but I’ll chime in anyway. The usual dose for rehab is 50 mg (at least that’s what the doc told me). I must have been a problem case - I took 100 mg/day for a year. I can say that I didn’t have many alcohol cravings, but I craved sugar like crazy. Then I stopped taking naltrexone and tried compounded tirz. Then I had ZERO cravings for alcohol or sweets.

For me, tirz is a game changer. I've gone from binge eating every night to not even THINKING about food after dinner. It's amazing! And I sleep better too, which is a huge bonus. I've heard some people use peptides for even better sleep, but I'm a little scared to try those out.

Regarding peptides and sleep, I've seen people talking about sermorelin. Someone on another thread mentioned it helped them sleep better and gave them more energy the next day. But they also said that it doesn't have the same effects as TRT. It's more for boosting natural growth hormone, and you need other peptides for the best effect.

Yeah, I'm also hesitant about peptides. I've seen some people online say that combining sermorelin with ipamorelin can be pretty effective for fat loss and muscle gain. But I also saw that one of them can raise prolactin and cortisol, which I definitely want to avoid. I'll stick to the Wellbutrin for now and see what happens, and maybe add the naltrexone if I can handle it.

I've also been researching peptides and it seems like a lot to learn. What are your priorities? Like what would you want to improve the most?

ozempic was running me like $270/month before. wegovy costs more. switched to tirzepatide for insurance and that's 300+ for low doses, over 450 at 7.5. generic semaglutide should be available in canada pretty soon.
