I feel like we mostly hear about the horror stories, the awful side effects that make people want to quit. It almost feels like some posts would scare people away from something that could seriously improve their lives! I started semaglutide about 9 months ago. Started at .25, like most people, moved to .5 after a month. I was so worried about side effects from reading everything here that I did .25 twice a week for a couple months. My doctor told me it's designed as a once-a-week med and should be taken that way. She said there isn't enough research on taking it differently. So, I switched to .5 once a week. I really didn't have any issues. Yeah, I get constipation sometimes if I forget to drink enough water, and maybe once a month my stomach feels a little off. But that's nothing compared to the positives!
In the first 5 months, I went from a size 18 to a 14, lost around 20 lbs. As I mentioned in another post, my "biggest" problem is constantly needing new clothes! But that's a great problem to have, right? Over the last 4 months, I've lost another 12 pounds. I'm now in a size 11 juniors. The best part? Last week, I spent about 45 minutes walking my little dogs, one at a time. I even JOGGED with them for a bit! I wasn't winded at all. A year ago, I don't think I could have walked that far. I NEVER run, I always joke, "If you see me running, something's seriously wrong!" It felt so good to get back, grab the next dog, and do it again. I wasn't a sweaty mess. I felt good and proud!
My A1C was always between 9 and 12 for years. It dropped to 6.3 in the first 4 months. I'm due for more bloodwork soon and I'm excited to see the results! My doctor had mentioned insulin a few times. At the appointment where she prescribed Ozempic, I told her I didn't want insulin. That's when she suggested Ozempic. I wish I'd asked about it sooner!
My friend's mom is 64, insulin-dependent, and has neuropathy. She craves sugar, doesn't eat well, and only drinks soda. She has so many health problems! Only one kidney, and it's not working great. She's been sick for weeks but refused to see a doctor. Last night, she collapsed and was rushed to the hospital. They didn't think she'd make it through the night. Today, the doctor put in a drain to get the infection out. She's stable for now, but they said they might have to amputate her foot to save her life. I can't help but wonder if this drug had been around years ago, would she be healthier today?
I know not everyone can take these meds, but if you can, give it a try! I know there are a lot of scary stories, but there are also a lot of wins! I feel like I might have a better shot at a longer, healthier life with my family! My coworker is on a similar med and has had the same experience. She's lost maybe 65lbs, looks and feels AMAZING!! I just wanted to share that there can be really great results.
