GLP-1 break: good idea?

Has anyone been on a substantial dose of tirzepatide or retatrutide, only to experience a plateau and then opted for a 'reset' break? If so, how long did you take off, and did it yield positive results?

I'm watching this thread. I've heard conflicting reports – for some, the appetite suppression never returns to its original strength after stopping and restarting, while others find it effective upon resumption.

That's exactly what I've been reading. Instead of taking a break, I've decided to add tirzepatide to my current high dose of retatrutide. I'm trying to lose those last few stubborn pounds. I'm concerned that if I take a break, it'll be less effective the second time around.

Me too. I've decided to just combine tirzepatide with my retatrutide for now, but eventually, I'll either have to lower to a maintenance dose or take a break. The opinions seem to be all over the place.

I've been using semaglutide (0.2mg/week) and retatrutide (0.7mg/week) and don't foresee stopping anytime soon. Have you thought about reducing your dosage back to the initial level to avoid the acclimation symptoms? Prescriptions usually require you to start over if you've stopped for 5 weeks, suggesting that's when the combined effects are completely gone.

Why are you taking such low doses of both, though? Wouldn't it be better to increase the dose of just one first?

My BMI is only 20, and I struggle to gain weight. I'm microdosing to minimize the activation of microglia and astrocytes and boost neuroprotective mechanisms such as synaptic plasticity and BDNF expression. Plus, I appreciate the faster wound healing and anti-inflammatory effects. I did try 0.5-1mg of sema and 1-2mg of reta at one point, lost almost 15 lbs in a month, and looked gaunt and exhausted.

For what it's worth, I couldn't afford the name brand for a while and was off for about 4 months. I was at 15mg before stopping. I gained back about 20 of the 40 lbs I lost and started again at 2.5mg. It worked well for managing food cravings, but I didn't experience the same sulfur burps as before. I'm now on 5mg after 4 weeks, and everything seems to be working, just with fewer side effects than when I initially started.

I've seen very different experiences reported on Reddit. Some people had to stop and then had a really bad reaction when they tried to resume at the same dose, even needing the ER. Others stopped and then it just didn't work anymore. Either way, I'd hold off on taking a break until you've reached your goal.

Here's my plan (no personal experience yet, just my strategy):

I've been on 2–4 mg of tirzepatide alongside TRT for 3 months. It's been very effective—I'm looking very lean. I'm not bragging; I've been working out hard for years but had muscle covered by 22% body fat (DEXA). Now I'm at 12%.

That leads to my physique goals: I think this should be based on DEXA body fat. Once I'm at 9% (around January 1st), I'll taper off and refeed with maintenance calories +300–400. (Macros are key.) I'll do this for 3 months while on an anabolic cycle (Test and Deca from a doc). I'm 45, and this phase involves eating a lot, so hunger won't be an issue. After 3 months, I'll be around 12–15% body fat, but with more lean mass. I’ll have been off GLPs for 3 months.

Then I’ll restart with reta and slowly cut back to 10% for summer, maintaining it with what I think will be about 2 mg of reta weekly. This lets me take a break when I want to eat more of the right foods. Edit: I plan to do this for years while my labs are good. So, I would be tapering on and off GLPs twice a year at low doses. I'm strict with my diet.

Yeah, I'm getting mine from a similar source. I've actually added tirzepatide to my retatrutide, and it's helping me shed those last few pounds after hitting a plateau. I doubt I'll take a break now; maybe I'll just maintain for a while and then lower the dose of tirzepatide only.

Yeah, I've read similar stories myself. I've now combined tirzepatide with reta, and it's pushing through the plateau. Once I reach my goal, I'll stop the reta and maintain with tirzepatide... for how long, I'm undecided... Maybe a year... But I'm going to try and avoid a break.

I absolutely hated how retatrutide made me feel. My resting heart rate felt like a full-blown panic attack, and everything I are made me nauseous. It felt like a punishment. I tried switching from tirzepatide, and it was so awful that I switched back. Now I’m on 20mg of tirzepatide and I feel amazing. Zero issues. Regarding stopping and starting, I still had to increase my dose to suppress my appetite, but it’s worth it.

I'm not sure about tirzepatide, but I know someone whose insurance stopped covering it, and she quit 2mg sema for about 2 months. After the break, she started wegovy at 2.4mg and ended up in the ER with three days of constant vomiting. Apparently, her tolerance dropped significantly.

I appreciate your input. I think you're likely to succeed. It's clear that you have a very well-defined, detailed, and ongoing plan. It's not just "I'll inject this stuff and fat will vanish." My body responds far better when I have a holistic plan with goals that extend beyond just reaching my target weight. For me, it's about a complete lifestyle transformation and having a clear plan.

Maybe in a few months I will scale down to establish my maintenance dose or stay where I am. I have exceeded my goal weight multiple times. I just keep moving the goalposts and raising my standards.

I know that feeling... I'm the same. My initial goal was 187 lbs, but now I'm at 183 and aiming for 172 lbs… then maintenance...
