GLP-1 Maintenance: Two Years In!

Hi everyone! I'm back with an update. It's officially been two years since I started a GLP-1. I'll try to cover the most common topics I've seen here.

STATS: I'm 5'2". Started Wegovy Aug 20, 2023, at 32 years old. Goal weight was achieved by April 2025. Now in maintenance, fluctuating between 126-129lbs. Started at 271lbs. Currently on the highest dose of Ozempic and plan to stay on it indefinitely.

HOW I DID IT: I think I just respond well to semaglutide. It really helped with food cravings and quieting the mental chatter about food. I was also dealing with insulin resistance and possibly PCOS (though I won't stop birth control to confirm). I quit drinking and cut out:

* Refined carbs
* Refined sugar
* Red meat
* High-fat/greasy/hard-to-digest foods

I also developed some food intolerances along the way which probably helped.

I don't do moderation. I’m very "all or nothing." I work out *a lot*. Seven days a week, twice a day. Running three days a week (ran about 50 miles each month). Strength training every day. And I just don't eat that much.

SOCIAL STUFF: Everyone knows I'm on a GLP-1. It's even on my dating profiles. Nobody has said anything negative about my appearance. I see posts about navigating that, but I haven't dealt with it.

People aren't necessarily nicer now that I've lost weight, but some people are comfortable letting their biases show now that I'm thinner. Some people forget I used to be heavier, which is weird. Dating is interesting. A guy dumped me when he found out I used to be fat. So, I don't relate to posts about people being treated better. I didn't tolerate poor treatment as a fat person, and I won't now.

OTHER: Clothing is a struggle. It’s been a process to replace my wardrobe. I've needed tailoring, but things still don't fit quite right. I have loose skin, mainly on my stomach. I'm planning a tummy tuck. I might also consider arm and thigh lifts, but I'm focused on the tummy tuck first. I think it'll take me from a size 4 to maybe a 0 or 2.

IN CONCLUSION: I appreciate this community. Losing 144lbs isn't the most exciting thing I've done. My life isn't better now. I don't feel physically or emotionally different. Looking in the mirror is often strange. This doesn't invalidate others' experiences, but I want to share a different perspective.

I've tried to cover the main topics I've seen discussed. Ask me anything!

It's great to see someone succeeding and not putting up with any nonsense on this journey.

I'm super envious of your muscle tone. I'm only managing twice a week right now because I lack the energy and time, but I'm on my own path and fine with it taking a bit longer. You've worked incredibly hard for it, and I'm happy you're enjoying it!

Congrats!

I haven't noticed people treating me differently (down about 100lbs since last fall, now in the "healthy" weight range), but my husband is surprised – I weigh less than he's ever seen me weigh. He was shocked at a surgical consult when they asked my weight, and he realized I weighed less than him, even though I'm taller.

Clothes shopping is a nightmare. When I was heavier, I just bought whatever fit from the "women's" section. It wasn't perfect, but it was easy. Now I have the whole store to search through! It's probably a humblebrag, but I hate shopping. I'm considering a shopping service. I've had to replace my entire wardrobe, keeping only a few old tops and a couple of skirts.

I still feel fat. I see bones and ribs in the mirror, but it doesn't register. I'm fat, always have been, always will be.

I thought about a tummy tuck but the cost is too much. If you have rashes under the skin, insurance might cover it. I started documenting it with my dermatologist... but it stopped happening! I met with a plastic surgeon about breast surgery, and one option is a DIEP flap, which includes a mini tummy tuck. He got excited about other procedures I could have done!

Amazing story, so motivating. Thanks for sharing! Loose skin can tighten over time. Dry brushing helps circulation and inflammation, and it can tighten skin. If you make it a routine, you'll be surprised at the results.

Congrats on hitting your goal

I'm also hitting my goal weight soon. Anyone got advice on what to do next?
! I'd suggest staying on your current dose through the holidays, then consider tapering down or staying put. Focus on strength training to maintain muscle and bone density.

So important! I'd also suggest journaling about things you didn't do before because of your weight and start exploring those now.
