GLP-1 & No Results?!

So bummed. Looking for some support here. I started a GLP-1 back in the middle of January and I'm not seeing much happening. I've been on 1mg for about two weeks, but been taking the GLP-1 med for like three months total. I gained about 45 pounds over maybe six years (the most I've ever weighed--215 pounds). A lot of it happened when I was in a super stressful job and dealing with all kinds of personal stuff, and I was super sedentary working from home.

I'm in a better place now, new supportive partner.

I was excited to kick off weight loss, but now I'm wondering if it's worth the cost. I've only lost maybe five pounds total since January. My appetite felt suppressed at first, but Noom lowers the dosage, then raises it back up, and it lands at 1mg (that's their highest dose).

I eat pretty well. I avoid red meat, and I'm not much for sweets. We cook at home so I can keep an eye on salt, etc. My boyfriend can't have gluten, so there's not a lot of bread or carbs around. I think the appetite suppression is working. I get full faster. I often say, "I can't eat another bite," more than before.

But I just cancelled with Noom (didn't know they don't go above 1mg), and I'm in between jobs, so I'm paying myself. I'm trying Weight Watchers and checking for my consultation soon.

Anyway, what do other people think? Should I keep doing this? I'm not a "super responder," so is it not working, or do I need more?

1mg is just the starting dose. The magic number for weight loss seems to be around weeks 2-3 of your fourth box (so, 1.7mg/week). You're almost there. I don't know what Noom does, but Wegovy has four boxes of starter doses, 4 pens in each box, and it increases from 0.25 the first month, then 0.5, 1.0, 1.7, and 2.4 is the ongoing dose. Some people go back to 1.7 if side effects are bad.

Real talk: Super-responders are all over this forum. Most people on these meds aren't on Reddit or other forums. Normal weight loss is minimal until the 1.7 dose. And that’s okay. The manufacturer, Novo Nordisk, says doses below 1.7 aren't reliably effective for weight loss (but some people do lose weight on the lower doses).

Basically, you're fine. You just aren't there yet.

Start really tracking what you eat. Weigh it all, and also track drinks if they have calories (like creamer or sweetener in coffee). Write it down or use an app. You might be surprised by how many calories you're actually eating.

A lot of people don’t lose weight on the 1.0mg dose because it’s not considered a therapeutic dose. It doesn’t mean anything is wrong. You might need 1.7mg or 2.4mg to lose weight.

I suggest looking for a new provider to get the right dose to see if it works! Good luck!

You need to track your calories. It doesn't matter if you are eating healthy food if you don't have a calorie deficit. Even with meds, you need to burn more than you take in to lose weight. Count calories and get an app to track them. Exercise, but don't increase your calories as a reward.

Why are you wondering if it's not working if you're not even on a real dose? You shouldn't expect anything until 1.7 or 2.4. It's cool if you're a super responder, but most of us aren't, and won't see anything until we get to therapeutic doses. If you get to 2.4 for a month and still nothing - then think about if it's not working for you, but right now you just need patience.

Also - really count calories. Weigh everything. You might feel like you aren't eating much, but you might still be eating too much to lose weight. Watch out for oils. Oil is super high in calories. And exercise more. You can do better than 2-3 miles 3 times a week. I do at least that every day, and gym sessions on top of it.

I think everyone's different. I shed about 30lbs in 2 months and I felt I needed to stop because I looked sick. My friend had to take it for 6 months before anything happened. Her weight didn't move, but she didn't exercise or eat healthy. I cut out sugar and ate salads. I still ate carbs, but felt full quickly. What kind of glp1 are you on? I know they're similar, but I heard the off-brand ones don't work as well. I used wegovy, and my friend used an off-brand glp1.

I stumbled on this while hunting for a closed group some friends and I set up to share our GLP-1 experiences. The search turns up absolutely nothing for the full name or any of the brand names. No group, no page, no post. I cannot even pull up what my friends posted on their own private timelines. Kind of makes me wonder if this brings in a wave of people who never bothered to do any homework first.

Yes, but are you counting calories? If you don’t have a calorie deficit you won’t lose weight even if you eat “healthy”.

I think the .25 and .50 doses are just to get more money disguised as "checking for side effects." We have capitalistic medicine, so it's a way to get a few extra months of the med even if it's not working. You're not alone. It probably doesn't do anything for most people until you're over 2mg.

Leave Noom and find someone who will give you a dose that works.

I agree with tracking everything! I started weighing my food and using a calorie tracking app, and it's amazing how many calories you can accidentally consume without realizing it. Little things like sauces and dressings really add up.

That's kind of what I was thinking too! It seems like a really slow ramp-up. My doctor said it was to minimize side effects, but I think it's also about the $$$.

Trust me, you're not alone! Lots of people feel discouraged early on. Just keep following the dosage schedule and focus on making healthy choices. You'll get there!

Xan_1994 Is retatrutide something I should ask my doctor about?

It's worth researching and discussing with your doctor if you're not seeing the results you want with semaglutide or other GLP-1s. It works on different pathways and some users are posting huge weight loss with it.
