GLP-1s: More than just weight loss?

Hong Kong Yanpep International
The 'now what do I do with the feeling' phase is where a lot of people hit a wall they weren't expecting - the medication removes the mechanism you'd been using to manage emotional states, and the backed-up processing tends to surface relatively fast. Therapy in that specific window is more productive than therapy at other times because there's actually something to work with.

The pattern of feeling 'thin' only during unhealthy restrictive periods and the role these medications play in the emotional eating piece is such an important dimension that doesn't get enough attention. Research mindset on your own situation is the right instinct. What dose are you on and how long until you started noticing the food noise change?

I'm brand new to GLP meds, but years back I naturally slimmed down (25lb) and held that weight steady until starting an SSRI two years ago. Since then snacking and portions spiraled and I'm at my heaviest ever.

Hits two weeks tomorrow on 0.25mg wegovy and I'm 6lb lighter already. Based on what I'm seeing now and from past experience, this medication mainly helps quiet the mental chatter around food so I can actually stick to my calorie target. It's not speeding up metabolism or making pounds vanish on its own, the same basic principles behind shedding weight still hold true.

Big picture, getting older with a desk job means my maintenance calories keep shrinking even with strength training in the mix, which unfortunately still means tracking what I eat.

Down a solid amount over ten weeks on a small wegovy dose. Lost a big chunk on a different program almost two decades back and held onto most of that loss up until fairly recently. Gained some back from stress eating! Ran it by my doctor, who felt this drug class suited me well. Side effects have been minimal so far.

Dealt with weight struggles throughout my teenage years, and I genuinely would've welcomed medical support and access to this drug class back then. My life would've looked so different in a lot of ways.
I actually know a teenager who's done remarkably well on a properly prescribed version of this medication, it's been cleared for adolescent use for a while now.

I've been getting treatment for this drug class through a telehealth provider, and it's been working out well overall. Noticed pretty quickly that some people describe feeling emotionally muted on this medication, sometimes paired with a dip in drive, since it touches reward pathways in the brain. For me it wasn't extreme and eventually balanced out, and the upsides have still made it worthwhile.

Started this past Monday at 2.5 mg. Genuinely strange how food has just stopped occupying my thoughts. It's been a constant presence my entire life and now it's simply not there. Makes me wonder if this is the mental experience naturally thin people have always had. Still eating well, three modest protein and fiber-rich meals daily, just with zero pull toward food. Nothing in the way of side effects yet.

Belated happy birthday, friend! I feel this, I'm an emotional eater too. Before Wegovy I binged constantly. It changed my appetite a lot, but when something big hits me emotionally I still eat things I should avoid. I allow for that, and return to my regular plan afterward. The scale might jump a pound or two, but a week back on plan brings it down again. Go easy on yourself and dont dwell in that headspace. Also aim for at least eight 8-oz glasses of water daily. Keep on keepin on!

For me it meant facing my emotions and finding other ways to handle them. I'm a binge eater who leaned on food for everything, happy, excited, sad, disappointed or stressed. Only a few months into the Wegovy injection, and learning to cope without food's comfort is the hardest part. There's also my motor tic disorder, and the constant stress of not binging has made my tics unmanageable. Another eye-opener was realizing my protein needs are large. I'm very picky and can't stand protein powders or shakes. Finding low-volume whole foods with lots of protein is a daily struggle, since so many suggestions rely on shakes and powders. My staples are Skyr yogurt and fish.

Wegovy for over twelve months here, 100+ lbs lost, and I'd like to answer your concerns about emotional numbness, distance and lost enjoyment of food. Neither numbness nor distance showed up for me, and I take antidepressants with no change. I still enjoy meals! The difference is the 'food noise' you've read about. As a former binge eater, my constant food thoughts fell GREATLY, such a relief. My doctor required six months of nutrition classes before Wegovy (mine were virtual and stretched to roughly a year). They taught me meal planning, telling real hunger from emotional eating, hydration and exercise, tools I'll need after stopping. My side effects: at 1.7 mg, nausea and vomiting.

I started Wegovy on 3/22/26. Depression has been with me about 35 years and I've taken Zoloft that whole time, 50mg up to 100mg. Since starting Wegovy I actually feel better.
