Just started Wegovy - feeling queasy!

I had a checkup recently. My doc was happy with my blood work and everything, but said I'm too heavy. They know I have muscle, but think I should lose some fat (I'm 5'11" and weigh around 225). I told them it's been harder as I've gotten older (I'm 60). It used to be easier to lose weight! I don't blame age, I blame my lack of discipline and bigger appetite. So, they gave me a script for Mournjaro but insurance wouldn't cover it so they tried Wegovy and it was approved. I had my first .25mg injection yesterday and woke up feeling a bit sick to my stomach. I'll keep posting updates as I go.

That's pretty normal. Those sorts of side effects usually go away after the first couple of weeks for most people. The big issue for some of us (me included) is the constipation. GLP-1's slow down digestion, which can be rough. Some tips:

1. Don't eat too fast, slow down. You'll get full faster on the meds, and if you eat too fast, you'll feel super bloated.
2. Eat lots of fiber, and maybe some psyllium before bed. If needed, try Milk of Magnesia.
3. Prioritize protein intake.
4. Stay hydrated, get some electrolyte powder (I like ReLite).
5. Take probiotics, your gut biome will be impacted.

Stick with it, the weight loss is worth a little discomfort.

You might also feel a bit tired or less motivated because of changes to gut neurotransmitters. That gets better too (mostly). You might have a lower sex drive... still worth it if you want to lose those stubborn pounds.

Good luck!

Yep, the doctor mentioned protein too. I don't want to lose the muscle I worked hard for. I'll check out the other stuff. My wife started this a while back and deals with constipation, so I'll look into psyllium. Thanks!

Against my advice, my wife tried it for several months. She did lose weight, but looked unwell while doing it. I finally convinced her to stop... and yes, she gained most of it back. But she's since adopted a healthier lifestyle and the weight is coming off... the right way.

I'm almost 70 and I know losing weight is tough; been there. We're retired and comfortable, and it's nice to have a treat with coffee every day. But you soon realize that comfortable and lean don't mix. Life is better if you challenge yourself... you need to wake up with a goal, not just looking forward to the next snack.

You're right, admitting that the issue is willpower. That's where you should focus your efforts, and that's the key.

I understand. I've been working on this for YEARS, so my goal is to get back to a healthy weight, stop the meds, and fight to keep the weight off. I already have a fitness routine. My problem was "bulking" up, which I did... lol, now losing the fat is the issue. I hope this will give me a boost and help me get back on track. For me, it's not a simple weight problem; I developed bad habits while bulking, which messed up my appetite. I should weigh 300 pounds with how I've been eating!

I understand... everyone's situation is different.

But, you don't sound that overweight to me. 5'11" and 227 isn't terrible, especially if you're muscular. Sure, losing 15-20 pounds would help (true for most people?), but you could do that over a year with small changes.

From what I saw with Wegovy, my wife lost her appetite and didn't want to eat, so she lost weight. If you're the same, you probably won't just lose fat, but also muscle mass. You'll get slimmer, but lose the good with the bad. And I read that most people who stop Wegovy gain the weight back.

Whatever you do, I hope it works out for you...

Well, you also gain weight back if you can't stick to a strict diet. It's just harder for some of us to stay lean.
I'm doing keto again to lose fat and then will use a tiny dose of reta when switching back to a normal carb diet to reduce the cravings.

I used compounded tirzepatide from a compounding pharmacy for a couple of months and lost visceral fat that hasn't come back. However, I also started walking over 8,000 steps daily about a month after I stopped the tirzepatide when I moved to Europe. So far, so good even while drinking wine and eating bread, lol!

It's interesting... after 3 days, I have nausea and less appetite. I've lost 2 pounds, which is probably water weight. Is it just a placebo? I don't know, but the compounded semaglutide I took for a month did nothing. Maybe it was a bad batch? Either way, that's 2 pounds more than I've lost in months!

You raise a good point that needs to be emphasized. The bulking and cutting cycle that's common in the weightlifting community isn't consistent and causes problems. Many people don't seem to make lasting progress over a few years. I had this issue and blaming lack of progress on cutting is part of it. It can also cause health problems from too much bulking. Most people should just change their food intake slightly and stay consistent.

Well, it's been a month and I've lost about 5 pounds. I'm starting the next dose, .50mg, on Thursday. I have a telehealth appointment today before they increase my dose. I hope I don't have to do this every month for the next dose. My side effects are gone now. Funny, they initially said the next telehealth appointment was in April. I told them my next dose is Thursday, how will that work? Now, I have a telehealth appointment with someone I've never heard of... Oh well, on to month two.

It's off and on. It's normal some days, and clearly reduced on others. The biggest side effect I'm feeling is that my stomach gets full much faster, but the bloated feeling has been less lately. I think it will come back with the higher dose. My doctor said this is just a starting dose and won't be as effective as the higher doses. I'll let you know.

That's right, that's why I asked. The main thing about semaglutide is the reduction in appetite. When you increase the dose, that effect will be stronger. It starts to fade after 5-6 days until the next injection.

Glad to hear it's working with minimal discomfort.

Hey Zara_79, just wanted to say I get the nausea too. It's not really the 'point' of the drug, but it's a common side effect. Make sure you're drinking tons of water. Maybe ask your doctor about something for the nausea if it's really bad. And try eating smaller meals more often. It helped me a bit.

I'm on 12.5mg of something similar and yeah, the suppression is intense. I can only eat like 700-800 calories a day and I feel stuffed after a small meal. I'm thinking of dropping back down to 10mg because it's a lot. Wonder if some folks are just more sensitive to this stuff?

Just a reminder that everyone responds differently to these medications. Some people feel great at lower doses, while others need higher doses to get the desired effect. It's important to work with your doctor to find the right dosage for you and manage any side effects.

I have a newbie question for D_Jen. If you start at a really low dose like 2.5mg and it feels like it's working great, can you just stay on that dose for longer? I'm worried about side effects if I go up too fast.

That's a great question! Some people can stay on a lower dose for an extended period if it's effective and they're not experiencing significant side effects. Talk to your doctor; they can assess your individual response and determine the best course of action for you. Don't feel pressured to increase the dose if you're seeing results at a lower level.
