Ozempic for addiction? Anyone else?

I've been kinda scared to post this, because it seems like a lot of people here have a specific idea of who should be using these meds. I'm not overweight or diabetic, but I'm on Ozempic. My psychiatrist prescribed it, and he's a big deal in addiction medicine, not some random online source. I've been clean from drugs, booze, and other stuff like compulsive eating for almost 3 decades, but it's a daily fight. Some people talk about 'food noise' - imagine that cranked up to 11, all the time, for everything. That's what it's like for many of us with addiction issues. Staying sober is HARD. Turns out Ozempic helps a LOT. I don't constantly crave drugs/alcohol/porn/food. I'm not even feeling suicidal anymore. Maybe someone else can relate?

No judgment here from me. I'm using it for weight, but a happy accident is that it kicked my 2+ decade weed habit. If it works, it works. Nobody should be telling others what positive effects they can or can't have. Stay strong!

I've heard stories about GLP-1 meds helping alcoholics. I will admit, it curbed my alcohol usage when my husband got sober this year. This class of drugs may change addiction treatment for the better.

I'm right there with you. Food became my new addiction in recovery, and it spiraled. In just a few months, this med has been life-changing. I've lost around 30 pounds, and it feels like a huge burden lifted. The only downside is I will probably have to stay on this forever, as that struggle was intense. This is honestly a wonder drug for overeating and binge eating.

I stopped smoking, after 20 years, and I don't even WANT alcohol. I've also lost 150 pounds. Ozempic gave me my life back. I don't care what anyone says... I was clean for 3 years before starting Ozempic. Congrats to all of us!

After 2 decades of drinking too much and other stuff, sema was the ONLY thing that shut off the noise. Like, gone. I hit my goal weight, stopped it last year, and did pretty well for a while. The alcohol craving is slowly coming back, but it's still manageable. I tried it again this spring and it made me sick-weird, because I felt great the first time. Maybe I'll try a really low dose because I don't want to lose any more weight... I just miss having the power to say NO.

I took Ozempic and Mounjaro for weight loss (down 260+ pounds!) and it totally stopped my Lymphedema flares. As long as I take it, they're GONE! No more sudden fluid gains. It's been miraculous. My Lymphedema was awful, and now it's been over 2 years flare-free. I'm so happy you've found something that works too!

I'm so glad your doctor is aware of this and using it! I lost my son to addiction and I wish this was available 5 years ago. Thank you for sharing. I'm proud of you for doing so!

This has also helped me with long-term alcohol abuse, so I'm staying on it for that, not just to shed pounds.

I'm jealous you have a regular doctor willing to prescribe it for non-diabetic issues. I had to go online for ED support.

Not sure where you are, but here in Canada it's a challenge getting GLP-1 meds prescribed off-label for psychological problems, let alone getting insurance to cover it.

I've had bulimia since I was a kid, OP. GLP meds are the BEST thing ever. No food noise, no urges to binge, no guilt, no self-hate. It's unbelievable.

I think it's great you've found some relief. Metformin stopped my food noise at first. It helped for a bit, but I just switched to Zepbound. I hope it works. Good luck, I'm happy for you—I'm sure you'll help others facing similar issues

It's a journey, isn't it? Some days are harder than others. Try to be kind to yourself.

I feel that so much! I still want to emotionally eat sometimes, but it's like, physically not an option, which is both a gift and a curse!

It really is mind-blowing. I never thought I could find something that quieted the noise this much. DocInTheBox, I'm so sorry about your son. I hope that, soon, this can become more widely available.

I've been wondering about mixing the occasional drink with this stuff.

Awesome! I am nowhere near your weight loss but that keeps me motivated. I've had like, two glasses of wine since starting. Anyone else notice a change in their tolerance?

Be careful with the booze! I made that mistake once. Had 3 drinks and was sick for 2 days. One or two is probably fine, but I wouldn't overdo it. My experience only!!
