Ozempic to Mounjaro: A Better Ride?

I was put on Ozempic in early 2022. I was on and off of it for about a year and a half because it was hard to find. The side effects were terrible. Really bad heartburn, tummy troubles, bad cramps, all sorts of bathroom issues. My A1c did drop some and I think I lost maybe 6 pounds, but the SEs were just too much. I heard about Mounjaro last year and my insurance covered it because of my T2 diabetes. I started it in January of this year, and by my birthday on August 1st, I was shocked. I went from 200 to 164. I had a few mild side effects at the start, but then nothing. I'm in my mid-50s now, and for the last 10 or so years, I've been between 185 and 205. The constant thoughts about food are gone. It's really an amazing medication. I had bloodwork done in late July, and all my numbers are good. It's like it fixed my whole messed up system.

I've been thinking about switching from Ozempic to Mounjaro. My A1c is better on Ozempic, but the scale hasn't budged.

Almost the same for me. I was on Wegovy for 4 months. Barely lost anything and felt terrible the whole time. I was throwing up every other day, constant indigestion and heartburn. Stragely enough with all that, it was the sulfur burps that made me quit. I took a break and then started Mounjaro. A totally different experience. Only occasional mild side effects and down almost 45 pounds.

I was on Mounjaro for 3 weeks and it was amazing! I had no side effects and dropped 8lbs in those 3 weeks, but by the end of week 3, I became suicidal and had thoughts of harming my family. Thank goodness for my husband and anti-anxiety meds until the drug was out of my system. I'm on Wegovy now and I have a lot of stomach issues and other side effects, but hopefully I won't become suicidal. I know it's rare, but that's my story with Mounjaro.

Even though I've lost a good amount of weight (about 60lbs in a year), and my A1C is stable at 5! The side effects are rough. I throw up at least twice a week, sometimes I am just exhausted, and the constipation is awful. Thank goodness I don't have the burps. I was thinking of asking my doc to let me try Mounjaro. I still want to lose another 20lbs and I haven't lost any weight in the last 3 weeks. It doesn't seem right to have these side effects if I am not even losing. Your story has given me the courage to talk to my doctor!

It's interesting to see the varying experiences with these medications. Some folks find Mounjaro better for gastro issues, while others have the opposite reaction. It really highlights the individual nature of drug responses. I wonder if genetics play a role?

For those of you who are losing slowly, don't give up!
  • It may be slow.
  • It may be discouraging.
  • But it's better than gaining!
I lost about 50 pounds on one med, then nada. Switched to another and it started working again. Don't lose hope!
