Sema or Tirz: Which to try first?

Hey everyone,

I'm trying to decide which GLP-1 to jump on, and I'm stuck. Hearing about your experiences would really help me out.

I'm not super overweight, but I've hit a wall and need a boost to lose some more. I'm dedicated to my workouts and want to keep my muscle. Getting enough protein is key for me, and I'm a bit worried about appetite suppression making that tough.

Here in the UK, tirzepatide (Mounjaro) costs about twice as much as semaglutide. I'm willing to pay if the results are worth it – especially if it helps me lose fat while keeping muscle.

I'd suggest starting with semaglutide. I figured I'd go with the cheaper option first and switch to tirzepatide if it didn't work. Fortunately, sema is working great for me, so no need to switch!

I used tirzepatide for about 2.5 months last year and lost around 15 pounds. It was amazing. My mood improved, I had tons of energy, and even some long-term pain I had was greatly reduced. No bad side effects at all. But it's really pricey 😭

I've kept the weight off since then, and I started semaglutide today. I guess I'll see how it goes, but if it doesn't do the trick, I'll definitely go back to tirzepatide.

Both meds can reduce your appetite, so your concern about protein intake is valid if you're lifting weights. Tirzepatide might feel stronger for some, but more appetite suppression doesn't automatically mean better muscle retention. Muscle loss usually happens when you don't eat enough, not because of the specific drug. If there's a big price difference, sema is a good starting point. Just keep an eye on your protein and strength, and work with your doctor to adjust your dose if your intake drops too low.

Thanks for the advice everyone! Appreciate the insights. I think sema is the way to go to start, and then maybe tirz down the line if needed.

That's a good plan! It's what I did and so far so good!

To @Frankie_28: Everyone's different. I didn't have any nausea on sema, but the diarrhea was persistent. I'm hoping tirzepatide is better in that regard if I switch back.

Has anyone lost a significant amount of weight and also increased their muscle mass on either of these drugs? I'm trying to get an idea of what's possible.

I saw someone went from like 275 to 190. They quit smoking and got treated for sleep apnea too. They were lifting weights too, so they were building muscle while losing fat. It's definitely possible with dedication!

anyone else find it way less effective the week before and during? still can't eat much, but cravings come back a bit. keep wanting toasted sandwiches and chocolate when i'd normally want healthier stuff.

On mounjaro since Nov, lost 39 lbs, eating habits totally flipped. Doc raised it to 7.5 since 5 wasn't cutting it anymore. Hoped the bump would give the same kick but it's only working two days then hunger's back and I'm craving snacks. Worried it won't work anymore. Just two shots at 7.5 so far.

Started sema first because that's what insurance covered for me, switched to tirz about a year later when my plan formulary updated. Sides shifted between the two — sema gave me steady mild nausea, tirz gave me sharper but shorter episodes. Loss continued through the switch without a meaningful plateau. If insurance is the gating factor for you, start with whatever's covered and don't overthink it — both work.
