Staying slim after GLP-1s?

I had to discontinue Ozempic after half a year. Eating roughly the same amount now and really hoping I can maintain my current weight. Heard some people say you could be on a super restrictive diet and STILL pack the pounds back on? Seems like as long as I monitor my calorie intake, I should be ok?

Yeah, you can def maintain your weight by keeping calories at maintenance levels or lower. The hard part is doing it without the appetite suppression and slower digestion from the meds.

I think most folks regain the weight because they just can't stay on track without the drug's help. If we could, we wouldn't have had so many failed diets before! 😉

True that, but it's not impossible. Dieting 101 will be a real thing now.

@SnackNoMore in all seriousness, most people DO regain when stopping, but it doesn't have to happen. You have to actively prevent it. Weight won't magically appear.

Compute your TDEE using a TDEE calculator and try your best to eat under that daily calorie amount. Eat plenty of protein and do some exercise. Find some low-calorie goodies that you actually like. You CAN be in that top 10% who keep it off. Best of luck!

The researchers I know would disagree about tirzepatide substantially affecting how many calories you burn. I think the real issue is hunger making people underestimate what they are consuming.

GLP-1s don't defy the laws of physics. Eat at or below your TDEE, and you'll stay the same or lose weight.

Nobody will *actually* eat 'basically nothing' and gain, but humans are terrible at accurately tracking their food intake. Strongly suggest an app like MacroFactor to get a handle on your true intake and energy expenditure.

Like others have said, it's about calories in vs calories out. If you've managed to change your eating habits while on the medication, you have a better chance of keeping the weight off. It's not a given, but it's possible!

I really appreciate everyone's insights. I'm definitely going to track my food intake obsessively for a while and try to make the gym a regular thing. Thanks!

For those who have successfully tapered off GLP-1s, how did you manage the appetite rebound? Did you find any specific strategies particularly helpful?

Still responding to 2mg after twelve weeks so staying there. When it plateaus below a pound weekly I'll go up. Rather lose 25-30lbs slowly than risk gallbladder trouble rushing it.

eating basically the same stuff every day keeps my gut calm—way more important than the weight loss thing. been reading that repetitive meals actually help people drop pounds anyway, fewer decisions. main thing is making sure you're hitting enough nutrients or maybe grab a multivitamin just in case.

sounds like your diet's actually locked in. you know what you're eating, you're consistent (or you wouldn't have dropped that much), calories and macros are dialed. took a nutritionist to get carbs balanced right but now i see them as a tool. down 113 so far.

Been on Tirz since February, losing steady. Had Chick-fil-A for the first time in forever yesterday—spicy chicken jalapeño club. Split it with someone, made it my whole meal. It was good! One meal won't ruin you if you're hitting your workouts. I do 5x a week, water's constant.

The receptivity pattern on restart is upregulation, not downregulation - the medication works harder coming back, not less hard. Long-term continuous use outperforms stop/start cycles for weight maintenance in most of the existing data.
