Personally I don't think starting at 0.5mg is worthwhile. Better to begin at 1mg and push through whatever side effects come up. Most people I've come across handle 1-2mg reasonably well right out of the gate.
With Reta specifically, the goal should be climbing to at least 4mg as quickly as reasonably possible. Trial data already shows the dose-response curve really picks up around 4mg and starts leveling off closer to 9mg.
So staying under 4mg means missing out on most of the real fat-loss benefit Reta can offer.
If side effects get too intense, splitting the dose helps.
The major Phase-3 trials have generally used a 2mg starting point, titrating up 2mg every four weeks, with strong outcomes.
Personally I think that's the smartest path, though I'll admit I've never had a single side effect from any GLP even at pretty aggressive doses of both compounds combined.
