Weird Sweet Cravings on GLP-1s?

Okay, so I've always been more of a savory person. Chips over candy, appetizers over desserts - that's me. I'm on 5mg of my med, about to bump up to 7.5mg. Food in general? Not appealing AT ALL. I'm forcing myself to eat, but seriously, I'm just not interested in anything... except ice cream. Now, that's ALL I want! Where is this coming from?! Anyone else experiencing strange sweet cravings?

I remember reading that sweet cravings can sometimes mean you're dehydrated. Maybe try drinking more water? Increased thirst is a side effect of these meds, might be worth experimenting with before you dive headfirst into the ice cream!

This is happening to me too! Except, for me, it's dried apricots, lol. I have a theory that our bodies are trying to trick us into eating more since we're eating so little. I have some breakfast, a protein shake for lunch, and try to eat a balanced dinner (protein, carbs, veggies). I've noticed my cravings are less intense when I make sure I get enough nutrition. Just my thoughts!

Yes! This totally happened to me too. It's bizarre because I've always been team savory. Now, I'm craving sweet stuff. So weird.

Sweet cravings may indicate some mineral deficiencies. Maybe try adding a multivitamin or specific supplements. Seafood is also usually rich in minerals. It might be worthwhile to get your iron levels checked too.

Thanks, everyone, for the suggestions! I will try upping my water as Jordan51 suggested and adding some supplements. I am also so disinterested in cooking, I could easily see myself getting nutrient-deficient.

I have definitely had to rethink my whole relationship with food. It's less about satisfying hunger and more about getting nutrition. Healthy food makes my taste buds more sensitive now.

Just a thought, for those of you who also use cannabis: I've heard the 'munchies' can sometimes overpower the effects of GLP-1s. It's like the cravings break through, even when you're not really hungry. So it could be something to consider if you're using both.

constant hunger and non-stop cravings at 2mg is actually not the typical response - it might mean the dose is still below your individual threshold. some people don't feel any suppression until they're significantly higher. the OP at 5mg with the sweet craving switch is a different pattern - appetite suppressed but the remaining cravings becoming more specific. are you planning to move up from 2mg?

Gone within a couple of hours after the first shot is the super-responder timeline that some people have. The OP's sweet cravings appearing at 5mg rather than disappearing is the other end of that spectrum - the mechanism suppresses differently for different people. The craving-type shift rather than craving-elimination is actually one of the more interesting individual variation patterns. What dose are you on now?

Do you have an attention condition by chance? Asking because there's some evidence this drug class helps specifically with cravings, sugar, alcohol, fried stuff, and that effect seems especially strong for people managing attention issues.

Because what you're describing sounds identical to my own experience.

Genuinely helps to have some kind of reward waiting in the wings when the restriction starts feeling like a fight in your head. Sweets have always been my weakness, so I stocked the freezer with some lighter fudge bars for whenever that pull gets strong. Funny thing is, most of the time the urge shows up, I end up deciding not to bother, apparently just knowing the option exists does most of the work. Also noticed a lot of folks on this medication saying something similar, don't ban your favorite foods outright, just scale back the portions since a big serving probably wouldn't agree with you now anyway.

Right there with you, just started .5 and the sugar pull is still real. Just be careful about going overboard, I learned that lesson the hard way and ended up sick as a dog one night!

For me, whenever a sweets craving actually hits, it's satisfied really easily. Like, I love a certain minty chocolate candy. Grabbed a bag of the small individually wrapped ones. Before starting this medication I would've grabbed a handful and eaten them all in one sitting. Now I eat just one, and genuinely cannot imagine reaching for a second, and other sweets hold zero appeal either.

Yes! Big portions were always normal for me and I couldn't refuse anything. Barely three weeks into the 2.5 dose, I already eat around half of what I did, with no interest in sweets or chips. Amazed, a bit sad I need medicine, but thankful it exists.

This med leaves me fuller after meals yet with an absurd sweet tooth, something I never had. Whole, home cooked healthy food was my overeating habit. Now ice cream and sweets could EASILY be my whole diet, and my drive for healthy food is gone. I resist, but I notice it. Seven months on, at 1.7 mg.

Same with sugar for me. The want returns sometimes but it is not a daily need. Not much else changed, except no urge to go out to restaurants, and I love chinese and korean food and used to crave hotpot all the time. Any meal past a threshold, even in deficit, adds a bit of water weight from salt that takes days to settle, which puts me off eating out. Wish other habits changed too. With my ADHD, buying stuff gives me dopamine, and endless new hobbies to shop for, none of that moved. Bored, and no longer eating it away, I feel in limbo and skip most hobbies, which does not reduce the shopping. Still glad food and cravings are calmer.
