Why is there so much hate toward using these medications for obesity?

Something I saw online yesterday has stuck with me. Someone posted a photo of a GLP-1 ad that somebody defaced with a slogan telling everyone to refuse drugs and stay fat, and the comments under it were ugly toward anyone taking these meds for weight. People keep saying they were made for diabetes and are getting downgraded into weight loss drugs. I get why diabetics feel protective, those patients depend on them. But for people whose weight comes with addiction, metabolic problems or a mental health condition, they are a lifeline too.

I live with ADHD along with binge eating disorder, and I have carried extra weight since I was a kid. Mounjaro is the first thing that helped without a rigid diet plan, which is impossible with binge eating. What gets me is the argument that side effects make it unfit for weight loss, as if staying obese for decades has none. One guy even blocked me when I said why I take it. Anyone else run into this attitude? How do you handle it?

Reading your comment I wonder if the stigma with GLP1s comes from it being a jab. With pills nobody would care, and older weight loss meds never became household names or bothered anyone.

Time will be on our side, I think. First, the haters WILL end up on the medicine eventually. Some are young and not fat yet, some women have not met perimenopause, some people have not had their lives flipped by a family. It does far more than shrink weight. It is the first drug that actually improves health. Normally drugs fix one problem and bring a list of risks. Painkillers like advil and tylenol hurt some people too. This one generally makes people healthier, which is revolutionary. Before, you wanted the fewest drugs you could get away with because all carry risk. I see folks whining that they do not want a medicine forever. Cost aside, most are stuck in old ideas where any drug is bad and lifestyle always beats it. But glp1s show better outcomes than lifestyle changes alone.

PCOS is my condition, luckily with no diabetes or prediabetes, and GLP-1s have made a genuine difference for me. 45 pounds gone over 10 months, impossible without the medication. Folks refuse to accept that bodies aren't identical, and when a medicine endorsed by international scientific bodies works, why wouldn't we use it? If some disease raised the risk of hypertension, fatty liver, heart disease and even certain cancers, the public would want any possible way to avoid it. But with obesity it's all their fault and self-inflicted, and we need to grandstand morally against them. Honestly that's the whole story.
