Honestly, I think diet and some exercise are essential! The meds just make it easier to stick to the diet. I didn't start working out until late last year! I was eating around 1,000 calories daily, and resisted tempting snacks by telling myself they were extra calories I didn't need! I treated myself occasionally, but got right back on track afterward! Giving up sweets and fast food was a must. I also wrote my weight on my mirror every couple weeks to track my progress.
