Reta and extended fasting?

Okay, here's the deal. My weight's coming off bit by bit, so it's not like I NEED to fast. But, I've always done 6-day fasts every few months and felt amazing afterwards.

I'm planning to be on reta for a while, years even. My body's gonna fight to get back the weight, and I need something long-term. I just hate the idea of ditching my fasting routine. But dropping my blood sugar too low scares me. Thoughts?

I wouldn't risk it. You might get really low blood sugar. Why worry about fasting until you hit your target weight? Maybe you'll be fine on a smaller dose then.

I kinda agree. Since starting Reta, I'm eating far healthier. Better food, vitamins, and collagen every day. And it's helped a ton! Body aches are almost gone.

I haven't fasted on reta, but I was on Mounjaro between Oct '24 and recently. Fasting wasn't an issue for me. I was careful with supplements though - potassium, B-12, magnesium, etc. I also didn't do super strict fasts - I'd have a sugar-free electrolyte mix every day. Maybe 1/3 to 1/2 a packet. It kept my energy up and stopped the headaches.

I'm on reta now and plan to fast later. I've only ever done 36:12 though, nothing longer.

From a medical perspective, prolonged fasting while on GLP-1 receptor agonists like Retatrutide requires careful consideration. The risk of hypoglycemia is indeed elevated due to the synergistic effect of reduced caloric intake and the medication's mechanism of action. It's crucial to monitor blood glucose levels frequently and adjust medication dosages as necessary under the guidance of a healthcare professional. Electrolyte imbalances are another potential concern during fasting, necessitating supplementation with potassium, sodium, and magnesium. Prioritizing patient safety through informed decision-making and close supervision is paramount.

I've been craving sweets like crazy since starting this. Has anyone found any decent low-calorie options that actually taste good? I'm trying to avoid a repeat of last month, which was a total bust because of a chocolate binge.

I hear you on the sweets thing, Bear_Ready. I've been doing frozen fruit pops. Pineapple/cherry or mango. Like 60 calories each. Or the Popsicle brand, those are only like 15 calories.

I've found that protein ice cream really helps with cravings. It's a bit pricey, but worth it. Alternatively, I recently bought a Ninja Creami and have been making my own protein ice cream using my regular protein shakes and sugar-free yogurt. Works great!

If you're looking for something quick and easy, I'd recommend checking out the protein smoothies at Smoothie King. I get one with 45g of protein and only 1g of sugar for 220 calories. It's been a lifesaver!

115 is still pre-diabetic, not diabetic range. Some people on reta see fasting glucose hold before it drops. Worth mentioning at your next check-in.

Breakfast plus dinner with protein shakes filling gaps is a reasonable approach if you're hitting your targets. The fasting compatibility question depends more on total intake than number of meals - if you're reaching your protein goals it mostly doesn't matter whether that's in 2 meals or 4. What does your daily protein target look like?

The evolutionary argument for fasting is genuinely coherent - the body's fat stores exist as the reserve for periods of low food availability, and forcing eating when you're not hungry while carrying surplus goes against that design. The GLP-1 and fasting combination is essentially using two aligned mechanisms rather than fighting either.

Yeah, could be! If you retest, try fasting about 12 hours beforehand and stay well hydrated, or was the first one already fasted? Would love an update if you run it again, curious how cases like mine play out.

Thanks, and yes, before finding reta and other peptides I ran keto plus intermittent fasting. Usually do an extended fast, three to five days, once monthly. Lost about 30 pounds over two-plus years on keto and fasting alone, but reta helped drop another 20 in roughly six months, so definitely staying on reta since there's still a bit more to lose.

Fast, though not by choice really.
On tirz I actually have to push myself to eat. Given a malabsorption issue from a prior bariatric procedure, going too long without food risks missing out on nutrients I need to get through the day. Still, fasting's become almost too easy these days, just leaves me feeling wiped out.

Yes, noticeably easier on a glp.

Honestly don't know where to even start with how beneficial fasting has been. Do at least a full day, my personal bar for a genuine fast, two or three times weekly and genuinely enjoy that stretch. Can push to 48 or beyond if it feels worthwhile.

Other days I stick to one meal daily, which some might call a form of fasting too.

Try running at least one fasting day weekly. Did this before starting this drug class too, so nothing new here. Honestly don't notice much difference doing it now on reta. If anything it's a bit easier given the appetite suppression already in place. Staying hydrated matters most, in this experience.
