Tirz hives... anyone else?

So, I've been on tirz for about 3 months now, and it's been going pretty well. No side effects, which is awesome. But then Thursday and Saturday morning I woke up with hives on my legs that just kept getting worse. Benadryl wasn't doing squat, so I had to call telehealth and get some prednisone. It's been a stressful week, so maybe it's just that, but I'm wondering if anyone else has had something similar happen and figured out it was the tirz?

I haven’t experienced that personally, but I think I recall seeing others post pics of comparable reactions.

Tirz can indeed trigger hives, eczema, and other skin issues. You can try over-the-counter antihistamines like Zyrtec or Allegra, taking them together. I'm a nurse, and telehealth could prescribe oral corticosteroids. Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks! I got some prednisone – taken three so far – plus Allegra and Benadryl. Seems like I'm finally starting to improve. Really hoping it's just stress and not the tirz causing this.

It's interesting that you mention hives, Chris_79. While tirzepatide is generally well-tolerated, hypersensitivity reactions can occur. Prednisone should help calm the inflammation. Keep an eye out for any other symptoms, such as difficulty breathing or swelling of the face, which could indicate a more serious allergic reaction requiring immediate medical attention.

I've been on semaglutide for about six months now and have dropped about 55 lbs. I'm currently at 176lbs. It’s been pretty amazing. I track my progress with a graph - it's so motivating to see the line going down! Congrats on your journey Chris_79! I hope the hives clear up soon!

Hey Drew_19, congrats on the weight loss! That's awesome! Hoping these hives go away soon. Was starting to feel really good about things before this.

the cross-compound histamine reaction pattern across sema, tirz, and reta with two different suppliers is pointing toward BAC water as the more likely variable than the peptide itself - the benzyl alcohol reaction is well-documented and can produce exactly the 5-7 day itch that persists after injection. switching to sterile water as the carrier for one vial is the cleanest test to isolate whether BAC is the actual trigger

Tirz gave me reactions at the injection site like that too when I began. A big welt that itched like crazy for around 5 days following each pin. Nothing helped (I tested a bunch of allergy remedies) but no way I'd quit it. I can't recall when they went away, probably around eighteen months in. They just got gradually milder until I stopped noticing. Occasionally a tiny itchy patch shows up for several hours post-injection, but not usually.

Get a professional medical opinion on next steps, not merely medication for the immediate problem, so I hope the telehealth person gave you some guidance. Whether tirz is behind this can't be settled without risk. With no prior hives, tirz is probably the top suspect; with a history of hives, nobody can say. Systemic allergic responses of many kinds are possible on tirz, and hives are an instant histamine reaction, close cousins of anaphylaxis, except hives stay on the skin while anaphylaxis is anywhere. The danger is anaphylaxis at your next dose, which is improbable but not impossible, while another round of hives is far likelier.
